Radar Detectors: Fact or Fiction?
If they work, and save my butt just once, the radar detector will have justified its purchase.
I am looking at either the Escort 8500 or Beltronics RX65. I am just concerned if these detectors provide only a false sense of security by reporting numerous false positives-->placebo effect. Personal/first-hand experiences supporting either claim are very welcome. Thanks for your time. |

we were driving down this really clear street in the valley (valley circle for those of you in socal) and it started beeping, faster and faster so my friend knew to slow down because what false alarms could there be in a completely residential area? so he slowed down and sure enough, in the dark there was a cop just waiting to bust us. imo if you can feel which alerts to listen to and you dont mind false alarms a radar detector is a good investment. /long ass post |

Hi Here in Europe, there is a "myth" that vehicles fitted with automatic garage door opening devices block out radar waves and give the Police officer a false reading instead of your Mph.... Does anyone else know anything about this?

I have the Escort 8500. Saved me more than once and has more than paid for itself.

get the 9500
YES radar detectors have a lot of false alarms (but you will know they are most of the time) if you get the 9500 you will have WAY WAY WAY less false alarms but they DO work, usually k or x bands are false alarms but if you get a ka band sifnal 90% of the time its a cop, and mine has saved me from dozens of tickets over the last 5 years i have used them BTW false alarms dont put you into a placebo into thinking it works, its the opposite, you get used to false alarms w/ other detectors and then when a real alert comes it takes you a second to identify it as a real alert and potentially ruins your chances of avoiding getting clocked; which is why i bought a 9500 |

Very very helpful guys. Thanks a lot. 533ogetnom--good to know that while you get used to the false alarms, when real shizzle goes down, you are still ready .
Again, thanks! |

I had both a v1 and a x50. Returned the v1 because arrows really didnt do much and it seemed to give me a lot of false alarms even when i turned off x and k band. After around 6 months, sold the x50 as well.
It seemed like a good idea to invest in but in the end, it was pretty useless to me. Most likley its because i rarely speed anymore. |

get laser jammers in front and back of your car...its what most cops are using now(radar is becoming old technology for them). but if you live in Cali, then you cant get them(illegal)

It depends on where you live. On the highways these days, as well as in my town, the police don't turn on their radar until they get the inkling that you're going relatively fast. When it's too late, they turn it on and you're either screwed or you're not.
In any event, I still have one just in case, but if they pull you over, the cop tends to give you an attitude because you have one in. I haven't been pulled over with one in yet (knock on wood), but friends have said that the cop is pretty much miffed that you have something like that in your car.

im not shitting you, i was making long gear pull runs on the higway doing logging with the procede, FIVE FUCKING TIMES it saved my ass while doing this (a lot of the time 100+) and AoshichanX i was NOT saying that when you gget used to the false alarms your still ready, the opposite, the false alarms numb you to the real signals and make you hesitate to hit the breaks, thats WHY i reccomend the 9500 because it will cut down on the false alarms by a TON vs the v1 or the 8500 |

I've had Escort and V1.
V1 is better IMO, it's upgradable, so you never need to buy a new detector when the tech is outdated. You send it in, and they update it. This will save your money in the long run. Also, once you've had the arrow's you'll wonder how you lived without them. Oh, and the magnesium case is pretty damn cool, just cause, you know, it's magnesium. They do work, they will save you, but if a cop is slick enough, you will still get a ticket. It's not a license to speed. As far as legality, there's only a couple states where radar detectors are illegal. Laser jammers are legal in most states that radar detectors are legal. ALL radar jammers are illegal in EVERY state. If you get a laser jammer, Blinder is the best one. There's lot's of useless one's out there, so do your research, but I've never seen a bad review about Blinder.

Of course they work. Only bother with getting an Escort or a Valentine. Also, putting the hardware in your car is not going to guarantee you will not get a ticket. Using a radar detector is an art and a science. Educate yourself on the forums at radardetector.net.
I've had my Escort 8500 since August 2005 and it has saved my ass countless times. However, like I said, just having the hardware is not enough. Last night actually I was coming home from work at around 11:30pm and noticed a cop had someone pulled over on the other side of the road going the opposite direction. I predicted this cop probably had a friend down the road running radar in tandem. I slowed down and was lasered a 1/4 mile later by his buddy. Laser is tough to beat too, unless you have a laser jammer you're screwed. |

If he's getting a lot of false alerts he isn't using it correctly. They can be programmed. Too many people buy one and stuff them into their car thinking that's all they needed...so untrue.

Radar detectors are illegal here in VA too and I use one anyways. ACtually you are better off using them in areas where they are prohibited as the police do not spend as much on newer technology or training methods to counter them...that's a fact.
