Exclamation Need local NYC advice - driving/parking

Hoping some of the local greater NYC folks can offer some advice here. Planning a day trip to NYC with some out of town friends (will be driving up from Delaware), and I'm trying to figure out the best destination where we can park outside the city and take transit in.

It is going to be a Thursday, so morning traffic and parking will be a consideration. A good friend has suggested going to Staten Island and parking at or near the ferry station and taking the ferry in/out of the city. This seems like a great idea - including the two ferry rides, but wondering how easy (or not) it will be driving into Staten Island and what available parking will be like.

Our friends will have a rental car, and we will mostl likely take that car - so having to be paranoid about one of the BMW's all day won't be a factor. That said, we still want safe parking.
Any thoughts or advice apprcieated!

Staten Island is not a bad idea, but I would recommend downtown Brooklyn. In SI there's not much to see/do....but in Brooklyn you can see some cool stuff in the area + some great views from the Brooklyn promenade....parking is not as easy as SI but worth the few extra mins. You could walk across the Bklyn. Bridge to get into the city, which is cooler than the ferry ride.

I would suggest some parking lot in Weekhawken or Hoboken, NJ. The parking lots are safer/cheaper probably than in NYC. (NJ guys - feel free to attest to this)

another thing u can do is to go to port imperial, nj and park there entire day and take the ferry over. they got buses that take you all over the city for free (if u ride the ferry)

The parking lot is huge and if you get there after morning where most commuters take up spots, you just park further but your car if anything is in better shape (door dings by adjacent parkers).

the ferry runs every 20mins to midtown (other areas are only during commuting hours) and once u get off the ferry, there are free buses that go crosstown in manhattan. parking will cost you $10 and 1-way tick to midtown is prob $8 (it's been a while). the last ferry is bet midnight and 1am back to nj.

you'd want to look at weehawken, nj to 39th st midtown nyc

I go to school in Hoboken and do this all the time. Park in one of the parking garages on Hudson Street. Then it's a short walk to the PATH station and a short train ride into the city.

Interesting idea... here's the big question - do you think driving into Weehawken is going to be smoother than driving into SI all the way up to the ferry?

Hey, isn't Hudson St. on the NYC side? I'd want to be on the Jersey side...

yes..it will be

i live right at the ferry terminal lol....

i think the cost and convenience cannot be beaten when it comes to port imperial. hoboken and etc is either too expensive or too much hassle

btw, another choice is where i used to live...newport, jersey city. you can park in their garages for about $10 for the day and take the path over

I would definitely NOT park by the Staten Island Ferry. Not only is it further away than somewhere by the gold coast of NJ but its located in the ghetto. I wouldn't want to leave my car there.

just park in the city, find a lot with an all day special. 30 mins driving around for a spot/garage beats parking in jersey/brooklyn and spending time getting to the city. if your going shopping just park at a muni-meter, $1.50/hr. traffic in the city my not be great, but its not horrible.

Hmm... you offer sound advice... making me re-think.

Was looking at parking at the SI Yankees ball bark lot. Says it's attended and open 24 hrs. Still, your comment does make me think...

But I'm a-scared to drive into Manhattan... that just seems insane.

Staten Island or Brooklyn or even Hoboken is a little far from the city. You might be able to find a nice parking spot there but it would be a hassle when it's time to pick up the car at night and when you're already tired from walking.

Another option is my apartment building in Long Island City. It's one subway stop (3mins train ride, 10mins total) to/from Grand Central. It's a nice/new self-park private parking garage. It's not crowded and costs $10-12 for the whole day or $15 overnight. You park yourself so you can choose your spot. You'll see a lot of BMWs, Porsches and other nice cars here. Also across the street is the Gantry State Park where you can enjoy an awesome view of the Manhattan skyline. Would be a great photo as well.

Let me know if this is a good option for you and I'll pm you the info.

One thing I just realized is you want to park outside the city and take transit. My location would require you to cross the city to the east side so this may not be a good suggestion for you after all.
