Hi guys, I had searched already, but I wanted a definite answer from you guys.

I have a 09' 335xi automatic without paddle shifters. I'm so used to down shifting with paddles on my E46 SMG paddles. I want it back. So question is, if I'm swapping in a e90 M3 steering with paddles, plus Burger motorsports harness, am I able to shift when I'm driving in D mode ? Or I must push my gear shifter to DS mode first? *even my wife's MDX could shift whenever in D

Any help would be appreciated !

As it comes from the factory it will let you shift in D, granted it will put it back in auto after a min if you aren't constantly changing gears.... No clue how switching steering wheel setup will affect it.

Yeah, you can shift in both D and DS mode. In D made it automatically shifts back to D if you don't keep using the paddles as has been stated above.

mdx shouldn't let you shift in "d" if its the latest model? I recently drove my friends and it required putting it in "s" to use the paddles. On the 335i you can shift in "d" although at a certain point it goes back to automatic, probably if you forget to downshift of something.

My wife's MDX is a 2011 model and it could shift whenever we want, so I assume its D mode and we don't have to touch the gear lever.

Yes, I had one as a loaner and you can indeed use the paddles while in D mode.

Any chance it's the same answer for a regular, run of the mill 2009 e90 LCI 328xi? (no sports steering wheel, no stock paddles)

I have a 2012 MDX and it does let you shift with paddle while in D and will go back after 15 seconds or so.

It does work, even if your car did not come with the paddles. I did this to my 335d. It came with the stock wheel (non-sport) no paddles.

You will need a sport wheel with cutouts, sport airbag, paddles, and the wiring. I used the JDB kit and it worked flawlessly. The whole thing did end up costing several hundred dollars, with the majority of that being the airbag. It's not a cheap mod, but I love it and when I sell the car I can return it to stock and sell back the parts.

Swap is easy. Maybe 3-4 hours tops.

I have a set. I took them out to put in DCT paddles.
