My Diesel Review

Finally took delivery of my 2011 335d M-Sport. It is the first (of my 7 new BMWs since 2004) that I had built exactly the way I wanted it.

I had initially wanted to get a 2010 N54 335i to replace my 08 335i Coupe. So I was really bummed out when the last one was sold as the 2011 N55 models rolled out fairly early in the year. So I briefly considered the M3, but then became intrigued with the 335d after reading the glowing reviews. The current Motor Trend 1yr review had one editor commenting that the 335d was his pick as one of the best cars on the road today.

http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/...rformance.html

And then I read about a clean mpg forum test on the 335i. They went from Chicago to New York (over 800 miles) and averaged close to 50mpg!

http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21337

I have always been one to appreciate efficiency along with performance. Which is why I have always marveled at the fact that I could get 30mpg in my 11 second 335i on a long highway trip. The 335d has been labeled by several as being the best combination of efficiency, luxury and sport that you can buy today.

As amazed as I was at the efficiency of the 335d, I found it just as shocking to see what kind of company the M3 EPA ratings are in:

14/20mpg 4.0L V8NA 414HP S65 M3
14/20mpg 6.2L V8SC 638HP Corvette ZR1
14/22mpg 4.4L V8TT 500HP Alpina B7
13/20mpg V12 TT 563HP 5445lb Rolls Royce Ghost.

Interestingly enough, if you plug the numbers in the BMW USA website, the monthly payment on a basic E92 M3 is $916/month. (36mos, 12K/yr), is exactly the same as the way I built my 335d. However, there is a $3500 ecocredit on the diesel. And the 335d is loaded for the same price of a stripped M3. But either way, I can't be happier with my decision. Just a little research will show you how much these 335d owner LOVE their cars!

Well, I was anxious to get some test numbers. I believe it is supposed to be around 14.1 at 98 mph in the 1/4 mile. I will be interested to see if the DRs can improve the torque laden launch 60' times.

Initially my plan was to pry my 08 335i sedan from my GF, and have her drive the 335d. That way I could performance prep my 08 335i sedan with all the parts from my coupe. But this diesel is so nice, I may just be borrowing it from her more than once in a while.

Edit 11/25:
The car feels very strong. I was curious to see what kind of test numbers I might get on it with some easy/mild runs:

5.2 sec 0-60 and 13.7 at 102mph,...Faster than I thought. The engine just seems so mellow, like its not even trying. I didn't even red line or give it full throttle to achieve those numbers. Just kind of taking it easy. But on the other hand...with a diesel, it might be just as fast driving it this way anyways. In fact I tried to launch in 1st gear, and the tires just spin so easily. Amazing how hard all that torque tugs through the 2nd gear launch.
A good running totally stock 335i will do around a 13.5 sec ET, so for this diesel to do 13.7 is pretty darn impressive!

These cars are geared pretty tall...80mph at 2000 rpm on the fwy.

Edit: 12/12/2010. After installing the JBD, set 2 notches above middle position. All else totally stock, full weight, including RFTs.

13.1 at 106.1 0-60 in 4.7 seconds.

Edit: 01/23/2011. After installing rear Nitto DRs. Still getting the exact same 2.0 60' times (Can't launch with too much boost or wheels spin)"

12.9 at 108.3 0-60 in 4.5 seconds.

Actually my first BMW was a 2004 325i Conv with sports package. Thought it would be my first and only BMW. But I liked the Convt so much...I got a fully loaded 2005 M3 Conv. Then I wanted my performance so I got a 2006 M3 Convt. Then I got the 2007 335i sedan...Got into the 11's with tune/gas/DRs, only. And I was hooked. Got the 2008 335i Coupe. Another 2008 335i sedan. And now the 335d !

The 335d is the most loaded one of all, and it is a delight to drive. The streaming bluetooth audio that became available last month is awesome. Music from your phone, games, TV, etc...wirelessly in Hi-Fi. The paddle shifters are totally different than my 08. (left for downshift/right for upshifts). Still trying to get used to that. These LED turn signals are bright! They light up the freeway onramp signs! And the M-sport suspension handles really nice and tight.

This car is an excellent daily driver! Its neat seeing all the little improvements that you get with the LCI, the com-box, etc.

It costs more to make. Elaborate emissions system, beefier engine, different half shafts, different gear ratio, etc. The car does weigh almost 200lbs more which makes the engine performance even that more impressive.
And the torque you feel in 80% of your driving (not at redline) is intoxicating.

You really have to live with one to appreciate it. I have driven them before, and on my first day of having this one, didn't think much of it till I started learning the powerband. However, I did always think it was interesting how you can be crusing in the parking lot at 15mph, 2nd gear, kind of step on the brakes and give it medium throttle and the tires start spinning!

Excellent review - thanks for taking the time. The d is definitely on my list when it's time for me to check out new cars again. It'll be interesting to see if the up the power even more in a few years. 350hp and 500lb/ft +40mpg sounds quite interesting indeed...

Hey hotrod, I stumbled upon your video on youtube and even made a post in the main e90 forum before I realized you were an active member of the forum (egg on face ). You mentioned you took it easy by launching in 2nd and shifting a bit early, but it seems like this could actually result in quicker times than launching and shifting "normally." What are your thoughts? Have you tried comparing the 2 shift techniques?

Congrats on the purchase!

Have you tried 60-130 times yet? Any plans to mod it?

Did you see the 354hp/700nm diesel planned for next year??
Put that in a 3 series and it will be a rocket!

And yes...it seems that short shifting is faster. On these test results of 0-60 in 5.7 seconds..etc. Must be a 1st gear launch. Because that is what I got yesterday in 1st gear. However launching in 2nd gear gave me the 5.2 second 0-60 time. And I am willing to bet the magazine testers even thought about launching in 2nd gear! Being able to pull tall gears like that..Must be the torque factor! FYI...this car is doing 80mph at 2000 rpm.

Yup tri-turbo diesel x5 & x6 for Europe only. Whats retarderd is thes cars are made in South Calorina and BMW doesn't think we deserve them here. Insane. There is already a X5 4.0d Europe-Only but in the US they sell the 3.5d X5; If I am ever going to buy a luxury SUV, it will be a diesel. I love my 335i, but I want a diesel SUV; Forget the new X3 with the N55, if that thing had a diesel option in the US with the 3.0 or better, I'd be putting my name down for one now. I just don't get how BMW doesn't know there is a ready market here. Hopefully Audi will bring the diesel Q5 here soon and I can get that instead.

The way this thing effortlessly sling shots away from traffic using only a few thousand rpms of powerband is eerie. So I guess this thing makes 425lbs of torque at only 1750rpm? This car is really a blast to drive around town! Bet this magazine testers had no idea how fast this car is taking off in 2nd gear either. They probably take off in 1st gear, and let the traction control slow down the car's 0-60mph times.

There are so many glowing reviews. You have got to read this one I came across. Its from just a few months ago by a Washington Post columnist. And he has been testing just about every kind of car in the last 40+ years:

It is so tempting. And it only takes a few minutes to install I hear. But I don't even have 200 miles on it yet! I will probably wait a tiny bit more. Does anyone know what the break in for a diesel vs gas engine procedure is? I obviously don't cruise at one set rpm, and I haven't really floored it or redlined it yet. But the thing is so powerful in mid range operating...it is hard to limit the torque if that is what you are supposed to do. I mean 425lbs at 1750 rpm...its hard to avoid that output...lol.

I'm thinking this is more like an electric car. An endless surge of low end power. But like a electric car...not spectacular on the high end power or 1/4 mile traps. (although really only a couple ticks off of a petrol 335i as it is). My goals are realistic...to make it faster than a STOCK N54. With all my testing on the N54s..I will definitely be able to provide a good comparison.

I would say same brake in for the diesel. I did change my oil at 2K. There is nothing like seeing peoples faces when you blast by them.

I still haven't figured out the point of 1st gear in this car... it seems the only time the car can go into 1st is when you switch to DS mode and then downshift. My butt-o-meter tells me I'm getting a faster launch in 2nd gear, and the numbers here seem to back that up.

Yup...interesting the magazines haven't figured that out. Perhaps with drag radials 1st gear might work...which I intend on finding out.

Are you keeping your 335i? I know you love modding cars, I would have never guessed 335d would be next on your list.
