M3 Buying advice
I will be looking at changing my car in the spring for a V8 and have been looking on the BMW AUC sites at used E92 M3's between £30K - £38K
I have a niggling doubt over whether the new M3/M4 will have a big effect on M3 E92 used prices. Should I hold out until then to see if there is a sizeable price drop? Also, which years should I be looking at? I thought that the LCI updates came later to the M3. Interested in LED rear lights (not sure that the brighter Xenons/LEDs ever made it on the front). Also which year did the HDD sat-nav come in (I don't really use it, but useful for future resale value). I have tried googling some of these questions, but there's not much info. out there. I've also thought about leasing maybe a C63 AMG which would cost me over 15K in 2 years, which might be the same depreciation as the M3 over 2 years, although I think that the M3 is probably the better car?? Thanks in advance |

mid 2010 came the LCI upgrades (LCI lights, CIC, combox) so look for a 10 or later reg made in late 2010 or 11. M3 never got the better headlights so you will need to change the bulbs to get away from the yellow ones.
Make sure you get one with the things you want e.g. EDC, 19" Wheels, Front Parking, Folding Mirrors, Min Logic 7 audio (Individual if you can) etc. I bought one from a 330d, best thing I ever did |

I can't see the new model effecting prices of the E92 very much. The longer you wait the harder it will be to find a really good low-mileage one.
The later M3 E92/93 came with a raft of standard features that were extras on other 3-series. This included xenon headlights, so no need to change the lamps. I'm unsure if the Hi-Fi (logic 7) option was available with the M3, it certainly wasn't listed - perhaps the Harman Kardon setup replaced it. One option I would look for is the competition package. Besides EDC, you get several other useful go-faster bits to help you enjoy the M3. Depreciation will be bad no matter what you do, so perhaps a lease option could be a better bet. But I don't like the AMG - too much of the wannabe about it. |

There never was a brighter light upgrade to the E92 M3. You always get the yellow DRL's.
As mentioned the Competition package is worth having, so to is the DCT gearbox. Amazingly on a £55k car heated seat isn't standard and worth having IMO. Service history is paramount as too is the 1200 mile running in service stamp in the service book.

I was reasonably certain that they all had xenon headlights, but memory being what it is I resorted to getting the M3 brochure out. And yes, the E92 M3 LCI has xenon headlights as standard. Which is what I claimed. I didn't mention the day time running lights, but would guess that if xenons were fitted so were the bright angel eyes - but I stand to be corrected on that one. |

Cheers fellas, looks like I'm definitely going for one in the spring, maybe earlier.
DCT is a must for me as I have that now and it makes a big difference to performance IMO. EDC seems the way to go as well. re: competition package. I looked for that 2 days ago on the AUC and there weren't any in my price range, I've looked today and now there are two available. |

There is a gorgeous approved used c63 in maidenhead for £38k, it is a 11 plate with less than 20k miles, black with pano roof etc.
I'd personally choose a c63 over an m3 just for the noise it's 6.3lt engine makes lol, M3's are far too common also

Is the C63 just a standard car with a big engine and a loud exhaust as opposed to the M3 which is a proper track car? I don't really know enough about the C63. Oddly enough, where I live I see more C63's than M3's. Also I saw some Jag XK-R in my budget. Not sure about them though. |

C63 is faster in a straight line and sounds awesome to boot, has a nicer interior plus a few other things, DCT on M3 is miles better than C63 and for an all round car the M3 is better and handles better in the twistys, more of a drivers car (words from other people making the switch not mine). Either one you get you wont be disapointed mate, Im a BMW man and the M3 is an awesome car even just pottering around in it.

oh and C63 drinks more fuel, M3 is about 22-23 around town etc and 25-28 on motorway, goes as low as 14s if you push it so probably 335 territory. C63 is 18s around town and lower when you boot it, M3 lacks a bit of torque low down which is helped by a decat +tune. C63 has torque and power from its 6.2L

AUC E92 M3 prices seem to be going up, will be interesting to see how they're hit by the M4. I wouldn't have a clue what spec to get.
I can understand being tempted by the C63, lovely exhaust note. M3 maybe a better drivers car but how often will you be at the limit to appreciate the difference? The exhaust note will always be there. On a side note the AUC site only seemed to have 15 335i's in the country the other day. |

My C63 averaged 24mpg in 12 months around London area and some extended journeys.. The engine is epic, facelift cars have much revised suspension and the double clutch box from the SLS. It felt planted and secure all the time and sounded amazing.. I'd get another. Not driven an M3 to compare though.
It's certainly not just a standard merc with a big engine. |

Of course the new car will hit residuals.
When the E92 came out it only took a year for E46 residuals to fall off a cliff. If it were me I would buy a 57 plate for £20k at this stage, or contract hire a brand new one for less than you will loose on a 3 year old one paying cash. 6 year old ones are already out there at £15k, in three more years what do you think your 6 year old one will be worth when there are M4 deals everywhere and the first 2-3 year old ones are for sale everywhere? |
