Just picked up a 08 335xi 6spd on Monday. I talked to my old Subaru tuner who also tunes bmw's with amazing results. He said to stay away from the jb3/4 said it was a shitbox not a juice box lol. My question is how do they actually preform? Are they that good that it's hurting his tuning business? I've searched and searched but all I can find is good things and good results. Reliable? Safe? Driveability? I've tuned cars before so that doesn't scare me, nor does the easy install. I'm just wondering that for 500$ is it too good to be true? Please chime in with your good, bad, ugly stories. I'm looking for 400awhp daily driven so tune+DCI+downpipes+meth/FMIC. Also, 2 things off topic but do people have problems when slamming their 335xi's on coilovers? I like my cars Very low. To do so, recommended suspension; pss9/10, kw, H&R, ST? I'm looking to be lower than 2" and all the coils ivi seen are 2" max. Last but not least my car shifts very hard from 1-2nd gear am I missing something or is it just the nature of the beast? Ps car has 16,xxx miles on it.

Its not bad, but IMO isnt the best, its still very good.
Search for yourself and make up your mind.
If I were to do it all over, Id prob go jb4, just for the features.

Sounds like someone wants you to spend money with them on custom tuning. For stock turbos and meth, the JB4 is fine.

chances are he probably isnt too keen upon piggyback styled tunes. he probably prefers ecu reflashing entirely as 'generally' is allow more parameters and better control on timing among some other things. Two of the some of the most popular tuners for this platform are through piggy backs tunes (Vishnu procede, and the jb4 by bms), both include many great feautures, extract awesome torque and hp numbers, and speak for themselves anymore. There are no issues with either when it comes down to it, and the jb4 is a perfectly fine tune to roll with. Piggybacks have progressed quite a bit, while they are still an over ridingint of the stock DME, and not a computer reflash, you would not know the different and i am more than happy with my procede piggy back, especially with all that vishnu has done for this platform, hell, i wouldnt run my car anyway else at this point.

That's what I figured, the tuner happens to also be my friend but I take some things he says with a grain of salt. So it looks like jb4 is my best bet at this point. I just cant get over the fact that for 500$ you get that many options and that much whp 30-50 from a stock car with a piggyback. I'm a noob to bmw's but I've been in the tuning scene for about 10 years. 40whp from a tune on a stock car is rediclious!

Like themyst said, he wants you to go to him to custom tune it for you and drop some $ on him imo. But as you searched already, nothing but good & i've been with JB since the beg. never had a problem with them nor my car.

Hey, congrats on the car and welcome to the forum! 16k mi on an 08?!? nice.

I'm slammed on Kwv3 and i wouldnt recommend it. i dont like the spring rate, and ive still havent found a setting i like for the rebound for the height i have. I was thinking about getting the Swift Spring conversion to see if it will help but with the added cost, i wish i went a different route. Its still day and night over stock though.

Bah, JB and Procede piggies, whether you agree with their tuning principles or not, have been proven reliable, safe, and effective for our N54 engines. I'd thank him and respectfully disagree with his assessment. Plug one in and judge for yourself. Several retailers including Top Gear Solutions have a money-back guarantee if you don't like it.

No idea why he said it was horid, I'll ask him today. He's one of the biggest Subaru tuners around my city and he also tunes many bmw's. He Actually has a e9x m3 that's beautiful and makes over 400whp. Please no names if you know who I'm talking about, no need to start shit. I'm most likely going with the jb4, it seems amazing. As for the coilovers my questions are why do all the kits say they only lower your car up to 2" my car will still be a monster truck if I can only lower it 2" I'm thinking of going with H&R, ST OR KWv1. I really don't want to spend over 1400$ my other concern is slamming the car and having problems because it's AWD. Have any people run into problems with this. My srt and sti where slammed on BC coils with no probs. I understand BMW is a very different beast though.

I do not personally run a jb4...I did in the past though. Great tune for the money, you really can't go wrong with any of the 3 main companies in the n54 scene (Vishnu, Cobb, juice box) They all have money back trial periods so test them out and figure out which suits your needs the best. btw, there's a nice sale from Vishnu on procedes right now.

check out the xi section for suspension setups...there's a lot of options

You have to be careful lowering any BMW that much (2"+). The front suspension geometry gets weird when lowered and doesn't handle as well as if you were to set the front properly. As for an Xi, the front shocks are shorter, and you may run into problems bottoming out the damper. I'm not a fan of the "slammed" look since I know in the back of my head that it hurts overall grip without chassis and suspension modifications.

You'll actually pick up closer to 70-80 WHP with a tune alone. Killer huh?

+1 on getting an explanation why he thinks the JB4 is garbage. Any of the major tunes (BMS, COBB, Vishnu, GIAC) are completely safe and will give you a lot more power over the stock settings. FBO + Meth 335's are running 400 WHP, and if you run aftermarket turbos you can get that with a proper tune & no meth.

The E9X M3 is a beast, but getting 400 WHP in that car is nothing to pat yourself on the back over (the car comes stock with 414 HP @ the flywheel, so a tune, exhaust + intake on that car prob puts you right at 400 WHP).

BMWs are def not "slam look" friendly. Assuming this is a street car & you're not looking to destroy your spine everytime you drive it, your best option is to start with sport springs (Eibach, H&R, Tein). If that's still not enough you could move onto coilovers, but if you're looking to basically get as low as it gets your going to need an adjustable track suspension which is going to cost MAD money ($2,000+). Like you've identified the biggest problem with modding a BMW is EVERYTHING is expensive.

op, my 335 is slammed on kw variant 2 coils. not 'slammed' persay, just enough to get rid of wheel gap, but pretty low.. (ive had previous vw's and audis much lower). ive had koni coils, b&g's, ksports etc and the kw's are the most impressive coils ive ever had. my car does perfect fine with them and drives great. just get an alignment done after installing and youre g2g

This actually doesn't surprise me. A real tuner would follow common tuning practices, which would include ignition tuning. The Jb3 and Jb4 dont do that. Does it work on this car anyway, somewhat.
