Best Software for Mobile Phone Back-up

Just a quickie really. Just wondering how people back-up their mobile phones???

I've just got a Nokia N97 which replaces my Nokia N95.

I've not really got any confidence in the Nokia software (Ovi) as it doesn't seem clear what has been backed up, where it's been backed up or whether it's been done correctly.

Any 3rd party software (preferably free) where I can back-up my contacts, messages, photos & videos and then dump them onto the new phone???

Thanks.

I always use Nokia PC Suite and it seems to back everything up fine?

It can be a little 'clunky' at times but I have used it before when swapping phones and it all seemed to work OK. You could try browsing www.download.com and see if there are any free apps on there?

You should have the option to back up to a .wab file (windows address book file), which is your standard windows contact format. Once backed up in this format, you can find the .wab file and back up elsewhere . You should also be able to export to an excel file format.

I keep all my contacts in Outlook and sync to that - it's then backed up on my work outlook server.

Yeah, I've used PC Suite before and that seemed OK, but this new Ovi software seems to have deleted my PC Suite. I'll try to download it again.

This Ovi software seems to have backed up my photos & videos but can't manage to get my contacts over.

I'm sure I managed to get everything over just by connecting the data cable and accessing it through windows before so will try that route again.

Are you trying to upgrade from one Nokia to another??

If so it is really easy using their application built in - it is called 'Switch' on mine and it bluetooths all settings, contacts, etc across from the old phone to the new one. Even all calender entries get transferred. It is very slow on pics though so prob best to just copy them all onto the memory card and then transfer them onto the new memory card.

Yeah, I did attempt the 'switch' the other day but it failed for some reason. The problem is I've gone from O2 to Orange & porting my number over. But I've now found out that I get no Orange coverage at home, once the 'port' has happened today to Orange I'll be sent straight over to Vodafone. So, my SIM cards are being cancelled today, so am panicing about my contacts now.

Got PC Suite up and running again so am trying to get that working again...

I would try the switch again but when it gives you the option of what to 'switch' over, just try selecting the contacts only - it takes a few minutes but I have used it many times (I am always swapping my phone ) and it has always worked fine for me.

Might be worth deleting any bluetooth 'pairings' you have on the old phone in case it is too busy trying to connect to something else, instead of connecting to the new phone properly.

I think the problem is that my wifes number corrupted somehow and since the phone has only displayed her number, as opposed to her name. It appears that, when copying numbers, it will copy all number up to 'rebecca' but non beyond it.

At least I'm managing to phathom it all out. Might have to do R-Z manually.

Can you not delete the one corrupt entry and then try again?

Wouldn't let me delete it on the N95. Just corrupted and screwed up the entry. I've just manually typed in the rest of the numbers (old school!!!) and wish I didn't know so many people who's names begin with 'S'

Got all numbers now saved on the 'phone' memory so will hopefully be able to back them all up on PC Suite, or just manually, then off to change phones again, this time on Vodafone and finger crossed the reception is better!!

What a pain.

That's why Orange are better known as 0 Range (read - zero range)

I've not been on Orange for a good number of years since I moved to O2. Never had a problem with O2 but don't recall Orange being too bad. Actaully, it just seems to be my house. It got full signal at a friends 1/2 mile away the other night and his phone lost signal (on Orange) when he nipped to mine last night. Obviously too much lead in my house!!! Fingers crossed Vodafone will be better... ...collect the replacement phone on Friday as they're now run out!!!

Wink

Roger, if you're still in need of a solution, you can always try the likes of Mobical.

I've been using it for several years, with Sony Ericssons, Nokias & the iPhone 3G (until using mobileme between my Mac equipment since last year), without any problems at all.

All the best.

Sorry for threadjack - but did you say you got your N97 from Orange?

I haven't seen it on their site. And i read because of the built in maps feature Orange weren't going to carry it.

Secondly if anyone else can confirm if it will pair with a Beemer and stay paired that would be helpful. I'm still using my 2.5 year old very bruised and battered N95 because the N85 i got in Feb wouldn't stay paired so went back.

Yeah, got an N97 on Orange from phone4u, but got it changed to Vodafone yesterday. Just waiting for my number to be transferred over so still using the Orange SIM card. O2 are dragging their heals to release it (claiming they are not happy woth the software) as they are still pushing the iphone and don't want the competition.

I've not tried it in the Beemer yet but will try it this weekend and let you know. It's got the latest symbian software 'S60 5th Edition' but not sure if that's made any difference.

Orange were good, but a couple of years ago coverage in my area went downhill - went to 02 and haven't looked back since.
