E91 325d Rough Start Up

I have a problem with cold starts at cold ambient temperatures, the car is very rough as if running on less cylinders than the six it's got. This lasts for upto six seconds before normal smooth running resumes. No other issues manifest them selves.
The glow plug light seams to work if the ignition is turned on and left for a short time and the engine is not started.
The rev counter does not pulse during the rough running it shows reduced revs and the the revs pick up and everything is smooth.
Any ideas?

Sounds just like my problem (glow plug/controller)

Interesting how many of these are popping up recently, apparently the soldering goes brittle on the glow plug controller PCB

Turned out to be the glow plugs, plug 3 and 6 had failed.

Did you have a crack at it yourself? Did you replace all the glowplugs?

I'm experiencing these same problems, rough idle on cold mornings for 5-10 seconds on startup. Also a few mornings ago went to start it, it turned over/cranked but didn't start and a yellow ! was displayed along with the little engine management light. I took key fob out then re-tried and started normal . I've got it booked in at dealers next Friday, still under AUC Warranty so I will report back then.

Sorry my mistake, yes manifold off not cylinder head. But they said they want it for a couple of days and need to order parts. I'd guess glow plugs & possible control unit ???? . Hope it's not in for too long not keen on the 320d loaner, miss my sports seats and 6 cylinder growl.

Ok quick update, Car went in Wed eve 5pm, expecting them to have it all weekend. got a call Thurs midday car all ready. They replaced glow plugs on cylinder 4 and 5. I also asked them to check the thermostats due to low mpg. They said they are functioning correctly. and the faults on the glow plugs would be the reason for the drop in economy. yet on the 16 mile A road drive home nothing above 60 i couldnt better 32.8mpg on the obc (reset 300 miles ago). so time will tell.

Still getting the rough startup on my 325d. Car is booked in for Monday to see if they can spot the problem. No dash warning lights so I hope they can find the problem.

It's back again.

Summer driving and no problems. Get to winter and the car for the first 5 mins is lumpy. As you pull away the car feels like it's jerking every 5 seconds or so. Give it 5 mins and the problem has gone. But more noticeable on acceleration rather than cruising.

Bmw had it last year and could not detect the problem and plugged in diagnostics. But it's fine in the summer.

Any ideas?

I had this with mine earlier on in the year. It was fixed with a software update, it's been fine ever since....
