Coding constant power supply

Hey I am new to coding and do NOT want to be posting on here about flashing an FRM2 or FRM3 because I didn't have a constant power supply hooked up when coding. So a few questions.....

1. When coding is the car running or just in the key pressed in position?

2. Can I have another car thats running be my constant power supply hooked up to the jumper terminal under the hood?

3. Can I monitor my cars power supply with any of the available software while coding?

4. What is the safest way to code my car without a fear of having a falure?

E90 pre-lci production date 04/08

Software I have: NCS Expert, NCS Dummy, Tool32, Progman v32, Winkfp, INPA.

I am coding headlights and some of the Euro features that were left out of the US cars and have everything setup. I am certain I know how to program what I want I just have a low voltage fear.
