ED Advice.... (Autobahn speed, Drop Offs, etc...)
I've been thinking about a 335i (maybe xi) coupe for a while now and when I do it (probably June). I plan on going the ED route. I have a buddy going to Europe in June and I’d meet him there, and just want to cover all my bases first.
1. I read that the 2 for 1 Lufthansa isn’t that much better than travel websites, so is it wasted if you fly alone? And can you fly into and out of other countries? 2. Does BMW help plan out a trip/route for you, or do they just give you a date and time to be at the factory? 3. Is dropping your car off in one of the other countries any easier or pain in the ass? 4.* Since the car is new and isn’t broken in yet, has anyone pushed it on the autobahn, or a track while over there? |

But I'll try to answer your Qs here too. 1. From the East Coast, you can usually find better deals than the the LH 2-4-1 deals. Yes you can fly into MUC and out from another city (open jaw). 2. You request 3-dates and they try their best to fill it. Depending on time of year, summer being busiest. They will assign you a pick-up time on the date of delivery. 3. Not really, they've done a lot of these, so no worries. Some locations will take a bit longer because they have to wait and try to fill-up a truck as much as possible. 4. Plenty of people have. The fastest I got to was 160KM/H, just avoid the cruise control and vary the speed and you should be fine. Besides they've run the cars at the plant as part of final testing anyways.

YEah, what he said above. Check out bimmer fest too.
1) it is the Q fare, not their lowest. You can buy two tickets on the open market for close to that price (although that is easier in the winter than summer). If you are on your own, it is a waste. In my experience, it doesn't really matter which airport you leave from price wise. I often fly out of different cities on a return. 2) check out bmwusa web site. They have conde naste tours if you want to spend the $$$ on it. Other than that, you are basically on your own. 4) Be gentle for the first 300 miles to allow tires, brakes, engine, and suspension to seat in. Engine should need 1000 miles to fully brake in. If you stay below 4500rpm and below 100mph you should be ok. (That all was from the owner's manual (and common sense)). I have never taken new (unshaved) tires to the track, but have seen them chunck horribly. Tires need to be shaved for track use. Quote:

Thanks for the info... I checked the bimmerfest wiki, just wanted some real world feedback from people who've actually done it.
I'm just having a hard time on the car right now, I'm already sold 100% on ED (even before I'm 100% on the car itself.) |

Actually you should sign-up at bimmerfest and ask your ED questions there. You'll get a lot more real world answers there because you get ED buyers from across the BMW line. e90 is a younger crowd and really not as many who've done EDs. On here you original post generated a total of 4-responses, on bimmerfest it be at least 10-responses by now.

Congratulations! ED is awesome, you'll have a great time. 1) Well, right. The deal is 2-for-1, so if you go alone, there really isn't any deal. Sometimes you can find a better deal on a travel site even for 2 people, but it ususally is a pretty good deal. The person flying for "free" still has to pay taxes on their ticket, and only the paying passenger collects frequent flyer miles. My wife and I went together, and the deal was about $300 less than the best fare we could have gotten otherwise. You can travel wherever you want while you're in Europe, but you have to fly to and from the U.S. via Munich. Of course, if you do fly around Europe, those flights have nothing to do with the Lufthansa deal, and they won't be discounted. 2) You just get pickup date. Used to be you didn't get a time- you just showed up whenever you wanted on your pickup date, and they'd slot you in. I'm not sure if that's changed since the Welt opened. Unless you do one of the Conde Nast tours, BMW doesn't plan your travel for you. 3) I dropped off in Munich, but it was very simple. Not sure what it's like at any of the other drop off points. 4) Well, yeah, that's half the fun. You should generally try to stick to the break-in recommendations, but driving on the autobahn is a rare experiene- at least for me. I wouldn't do anything silly, but your car isn't going to blow up if you blow past the 4,500 mark a couple of times before you get to 1,500 miles. Have fun, but don't do anything pointlessly stupid, like seeing how fast you can go in 1st gear.

1) You still pay the tax for the second person for 2-4-1, therefore it usually isn't that great of a deal since half of the ticket price is tax. Also Lufthansa booked tickets are usually a bit more expensive than their United code share counterparts. I flew for $420 alone. If I did 2-4-1, it would have been just under $800... about a $30 savings.
2) They give you a date and time to pick up your car at the Welt (everything else is up to you). In the Summer you must be there before that time as they deliver over 200 cars a day at the Welt. Your planner at the Welt and your delivery specialist will help you plan the rest of your trip if you don't know what you want to do after picking up your car. 3) No idea. Dropped off in Munich. They now charge for Italy drop-off, though. 4) Hitting 250 KPH once on the Autobahn won't damage your engine. It is thrilling and nothing can replace the experience. You don't need to go over 4500 RPM to reach 250 KPH, especially in the 335i with its locomotive torque. If it is an automatic, keep it in manual mode and don't allow the transmission to kick down. Bimmerfest definitely has an excellent dedicated ED forum. I relied on it heavily for my trip! Also, check out Irv's site in his signature above. |

We did ED and it was amazing. Cruised at 120 mph and pissed that I didn't push it further when I had the chance.
Dropped off in Munich because I didn't want anyone else driving our car across country to a dropoff point. LF was the best airfare deal for us at the time. BMW offers trip packages, but I think most folks set up their own. We did, with LOTS of help form Bimmerfesters. |
