Still under warranty, he told me the part cost $1,840.00!! So glad I dont have to pay. I will pick the car up tomorrow morning and will report on how it drives after the reflash.
I would definitely want a new cat too...if I've been baking it; my car doesn't seem to pull as hard as the loaners I get, makes me think the cat is clogging.

I picked my car up this morning. Everything seems to be normal. I didn't notice any reduction in power or fuel economy.

I'm not sure exactly what they did to the car; it's kind of hard to read the service report. I know for certain they didn't replace my EGR valve since I had already had that replaced with the latest part a few months ago. But I'm not sure if they replaced anything else either. I'll have to check the service report more closely. It does say for certain that they performed a reprogramming, and I noticed some of my presets were reset.

All in all, it seems not much has changed and that's probably a good thing. And on a side note, the 4-cylinder 528i loaner I drove returned 24 mpg on my commute vs my car's 32 mpg. So much for the 4-banger being as efficient as the diesel...

I noticed the same thing, but for me it seems like its more based on the dead spot in the pedal on the 8 speed transmission, and I have to push the pedal more in order to have the car move forward.

If they get rid of the engine braking, I'll be sad. Its real handy in stop and go traffic.

Interesting about your economy. I havent had the chance to take any longer drives, but the few times I was able to get over 40mpg in the 528i. Must have been the short drive that caused it to stay that high.

highest economy I have gotten in the d is 35.5 from Salt Lake City to Las Vegas. lowest was 28.4 during daily driving and to work. Interested to see the change if I get a software update.

Can't really compare the two cars. Maybe a better comparison would be w/the new F30 328. BTW, I had an F10 528 as a loaner and hated it. Floaty, HUGE feeling, and the start-stop feature drove me crazy. The damn car shuttered everytime it shut down and would start up.

From Jim E. at the fest, here's needed clarification on the details of the recall:

Quote:
Ok, now that I've had some time to really look into this, I believe I can shed some light on all this recall confusion. Why? I have two diesels (E90 and X5) and a friend also has an E90 diesel all of which cover this recall. In reality, it is actually THREE different recalls that each depend on engine production dates.

All three recall notices deal with the same exact subject: "Voluntary Emissions Recall Campaign 11E-A03: Check and/or Replace Emissions Monitoring Components"

In chronological order:

#1. SIB 18 02 12 covers - E70 and E90 with the M57Y engine produced from January 2008 to September 2009.

#2. SIB 18 03 12 covers - E70 and E90 with the M57Y engine produced from April 2009 to March 2010.

#3. SIB 11 04 12 covers - E70 and E90 with the M57Y engine produced from January 2010 to March 2011.

Recall #1 above requires the dealer to check the SCR part number. If the part number is NOT 18308509753 (E70) or 18308509750 (E90), the SCR catalyst will need to be replaced.

The next part of recall #1 deals with the "mixer." If your mixer has a "multiple fin" arrangement, then it will need to be replaced with P/N 18308513445 (E70) or P/N 18308512438 (E90) which are single fins. Single fins basically look like a jet turbine fins at the intake. Each fin is a solid single straight fin.

The last part of recall #1 is to inspect the EGR and replace it if it's the old style with (P/N 11 71 8 517 217 or P/N 11 71 8 512 526)

Recall #2 only deals with the mixer and EGR. This means that at some point in production, they started to install the new SCR part.

Recall #3 only deals with the EGR which means that at some point in production, they also started to use the new style mixer and only need to address the EGR.

Hope this helps.

Oh not so bad. I guess I am getting EGR only. For once the dealer was right and said will take less than a day.

Just got mine too - car production date 02/2010. Was told by dealer that all they have to do is the EGR Valve and a possible software flash. Have to say though, he didn't seem to sure about any of it, especially the flash.

I have moved since getting the car, so the notice probably went to the old address and is going to get lost.

Should I go to the dealer now or just wait until the yearly maintenance to get this taken care of, which is in November? If I showed up at the dealer without the notice, would they say what the f*** are you doing here and refuse to take care of it?

This is after exhaustive emails to my dealer that were ignored. I emailed other dealers and one actually responded:

Quote:
Hey John

Sorry for the late reply, there is two open recalls for your vehicle. We would have to update the EGR valve and metering components. Please let me know if you would like to book an appointment for these services.

Regards,
Sandro.

Just got my recall work done today. 2011 335d. March 2010 production and my invoice reads in part:

----------
Recall B11 04 12, M57 EGR Valve
Replace EGR and Reprogram
Recall
----------

The following parts were listed:

1 11-71-8-512-526 EGR-Valve
1 13-54-7-792-098 O-Ring
1 11-61-2-245-439 Rubber Seal

Car was reprogrammed. I wasn't able to discern any performance change on the drive home. So far so good I guess.

I guess I'm lucky my dealership doesn't have BMW loaners. I ended up in a Ford Fusion. Definitely no interest there lol.

In all seriousness though I went from Sedan (330i) to Coupe (335i) back to Sedan (335d). The coupe was great while I had it but overall I like the sedan the best. My 335d M-Sport chassis feels much stiffer and the car feels better planted at high speed than my E92 ever did, even on the Nürburgring. I don't think I could give up this amazing M57 engine just to get a coupe, or any options I don't have, either.

Besides, the novelty of the seat belt assist wears off VERY quickly.
