Apollo K&N filter for 330D pre lci

I have been interested in upgrading my air filter for awhile now, i been waiting for some kind of reviews on this Apollo induction kit but havnt seen anybody with first hand experience.

Can anybody give me advice on these? K&N Apollo air filter which replaces the current stock air filter panel, this one is for a 330D. Will it make any difference? And will it effect the MAF sensor in anyway?

Ive put a standard K&N filter before which just fits in the original air filter housing but within the first service it was so clogged up i think it does more harm then any good, so am looking for something with a better design, and the Apollo looks like a more traditional induction kit which has a pipe and a scoop at the end.

Any advice is appreciated thank you, i am guessing this will go really nice with the recent straight pipe i installed for the exhaust.

Heres the link on k&n website.

Heres a 320d lci with a induction kit, which doesnt sound too bad for a diesel, check it out and let me know if this is possible on a pre lci since the air filter housing is different.

Don't waste your money, the standard setup is effectively a CAI, there is a large cone filter (it's not a panel) inside an airbox, fed by cold air from behind the grills.

So you dont think it can be a better air flow if the induction kit sucks te air from inside the engine bay instead of using the fromt grill to allow it to go into the snorkles, i know the RAM air scoops dont help much regarding directing air into the air filter, any other suggestions on how to increase air flow ??

Thanks for replys

You'll be sucking in warm air from the engine bay. Warm air is less dense, ergo less oxygen equals less power. Unless you can properly shield it and give it a good source of cold air, I wouldn't bother.

I understand you, good point. It would be warm air, what you think about rpi Ram scoops on a 330D? Is that a waste of money regarding induction or can it be a slight benefit by guiding the air into the snorkles?

Its all largely make believe. The pressure required for any "ram air" effect only works at extremely high speeds, with extremely carefully designed air intake systems (ie race car stuff)

Your engine has a turbocharger, and any "ram air" effect that did exist would make no difference to engine performance, as the ECU aims for a target boost pressure. Even if you did manage 1 or 2 psi of "ram air" it would simply mean the turbo works slightly less hard, but its all so small that it basically makes no odds to engine performance.

If you want to increase airflow, you simply need to have the ECU tell the turbo to put more air in.

Great reply, makes sense.

So is there anyway of actually upgrading the e92 330D air intake?
Or is their any budget upgrades left for me go for to see a slight performance upgrade, dpf removal with remap, straight pipe on exhaust, egr delete with swirl flap blanks, anything else left to see this baby pull a little harder? Or sound a touch better?

Cheers for replys.

You really need a proper custom map done, thats going to make the most of your cars modifications.

Perhaps try BW Chip Tune?

A custom map sounds good, any advice on who does the best custom remaps on these 330Ds? BW chip tune i will look into these guys.

My map is pretty old now, about 3 yrs old and i have had the egr delete , swirl flap blank, and straight pipe exhaust since then, all these surely effect engine components and how the current remap works, not to mention my re condtion on my turbo and new clutch flywheel.

Had alot of work done since am sure am due for a new map,

Also with the new exhaust my mpg is as low as 23mpg, was sitting at 26 before the job, but its starting to eat like a petrol now lol,

All advice and comments appreciated.

Sounds like you need to change your thermostats to tackle the poor mpg before doing anything else.

Ive just changed the thermostat and mainstat like 8 months ago, cars done total 100k but i am not sure if i gotta change the stat again, they was brand new stats i installed them. I done some temperture test last week and in cold london weather it was getting up to 85-88 after 25mins of driving. I saw 91 numbers when reving hard and driving for 30mins. What you suggest? Am sure the poor mpg is me sticking in 2nd gear and the use of v power on the diesel, i realised it burns much quicker when pushing hard.

Could it be something else? Does having a straight pipe and egr delete mean the car uses morw fuel?

Were they genuine BMW thermostats or aftermarket ones from somewhere like Eurocarparts?

The mpg is terrible, mine averaged 51.3mpg on a gentle 200 mile motorway run yesterday, my coolant temp is low 90's even cruising

Now i think they was from aftermarket source, both bosch thermostats tho so garage mate told me its pretty much the same. Temps get to about 85-89 within 25mins of driving, how quick does yours get to these tempertures, are you getting this temp at 5mins in cold days? I know it takes long for a diesel to heat up, i do in town driving alot, short journeys and drive like i stole my own car sometimes too, specially since igot the exhaust built in, but the mpg has dropped alot am just wondering is it something else?

Anymore advice on remappers? BW chip tune is on my list for a custom map, any other ones recommened by you guys?

Cheers gents

It's an 89c thermostat, once up to temp it shouldn't drop below this, mine gets there within 10 mins usually, then runs in the low 90's.

Mine was remapped by more-bhp.com and it was tweaked on the rollers to suit my car, I must say I am very pleased with it.

Depends on the outside temp & driving conditions, but if it's not at or over 89c after 15 mins then it's not right
