Brakes Always On?
In my current '08 E90, I am seeing a lot of brake dust. More than in my previous cars. I am given to understand that the brakes are being applied periodically, when it is wet out, to dry them and give us better stopping power. If so, does this only work in the wet or does it do it all the time, which is what I am thinking. I normally swap out the BMW pads for other, less "messy and dirty" pads. The wheels need a good cleaning every week.

Just found out that the car will "engage" the brakes under a number of circumstances.
1) in the wet, it will "dry brake" to keep the rotors dry and stopping power to the max 2) If you jump out of the throttle, real quick, it will pump up the brake system and put the pads on the rotor, in anticipation of the brakes being needed, cause you jumped off the throttle 3) "soft braking" that little head bob thing that it does when you slow down. Apparently, you can "turn off" the "soft braking" I guess these are nice safety features, but it means that if you are having a "spirited" driving session, it looks like the pads will always be in contact with the rotor.

Nick,
I understand that the pads are generally always in contact with the rotors, however, there is so much dust on the wheels within three days that it more than just contact. I spoke with a technician who had just taken the course on the E90 and he definitely said that it is more than just touching but actually, applying the brakes. As for the head bob thing, basically as you come to a stop, the car actually releases the brakes, just before you come to a stop. I have owned many BMWs and have taken a lot of driver training, so I generally know how much brake dust there should be, and in the case of this new E90, there is just way too much brake dust due to the normally accepted brake and rotor contact.
