Anyone wondering what inside a stock muffler looks like? (pics inside)

So after this backfiring happened i noticed weird stuff coming out my exhaust.
thread to backfiring.
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=788425

anyways i dropped the exhaust yesterday and took it to my buddies house where we wanted cut the cats open and check on the or remove them because they sounded like they were screwed.
long story short we cut the secondaries open and there was nothing in there!! lol

so we thought it might be piled up in the muffler so we cut the muffler open and i guess we cut too short. but on the uncut side i think contains padding and straight pipe with holes in it, but the cats probably passed right through it. so I'm going to weld it up tomorrow morning and re install it on the car
in the mean time here is a pic of the the progress
enjoy.

I wonder if that secondary car converter is really a cat converter. Just by looking at the picture it looks more like a resonator.

Looks like a perforated core and fiberglass or something. That's why most cat back's don't add too much power, it's already a pretty good exhaust from the factory.

Without that packing it might sound like a tin can though. Have you driven it?

Think you'll like it without padding or minimal. The 335is muffler sounds dope and its the oem muffler without much of the padding.

Definitely curious. It might just be the happy medium from a muffler delete as those tend to drone a lot. If anything it may be a bit raspy.

They are resonators. There are no secondary cats as the newbs/lemmings seem to think.

ok I have some important info for UK owners.

I have catless DP and stock exhaust so in theory I have no cats at all.

Well I passed my MOT test with the same results as stock DP.

Anyone worried about no cats well I say go for it UK testers will pass the car in any case.

You are the newb/lemming.
Those are not resonators, they are catalytic converters. Cut an intact one open and it will be BEYOND obvious that it is not a resonator and is indeed a catalytic converter

It's a bit more different than that actually, that's why removing packing material doesn't achieve the same sound.
