I'm finding more and more mid to large construction firms are abusing their position at the moment and basically just trying to screw small firms over. Arseholes.

And while we're on the subject, what is it with people who think that being rude and unpleasant is the way to get on when dealing with others? The likes of site managers and QSs spring to mind. Hey guys, I'll let you in on a secret. No one is scared of you, everyone thinks you're a wanker (and that does matter), no one does you any favours, prices are usually artificially high because you're a wanker and dealing with wankers is hard work and also I think a lot of people are great believers in the old 'be nice on your way up...' adage.

Sounds like we have similar jobs/frustrations/clients - we're in construction also (specialist metal roofing & cladding)

We are experiencing "Subby bashing" like never before.

As a sub-contractor you have a catch 22 situation - refuse to accept some fairly onerous clauses in subcontracts (and therefore fail to secure the work) or sign up, knowing you're about to get an arsefucking, but close your eyes, cross your fingers, and hope they lube-up and go gentle.

I really do not like being overtly contractual, but more and more of my time is being spent being exactly that. Not good.

BTW, don't be afraid to wield the stick of adjudication - it is the subby's friend. In many cases just the threat of it does the business with a lot f main contractors, and thse that aren't frightened from it and end up going invariably get sent home with their ass in a sling.

I've not been in to work today as I had the boy but they're still at it according to an email I received this morning telling me how much I should be charging and how much they'd be 'happy' to pay. We're not talking about a lot of money here, a couple of hundred quid but it's the fucking principle. Well I'm going to let this one run and if the 12 year old QS still wants to play hard ball and make a name for himself at the back end of next week we'll see how he goes about getting new subbies on site for the handover on Friday. The site being the largest teaching hospital in Sheffield. It's only the new intensive care unit. I'm sure he'll be fine.

I gave one of our main contractors a 5pm deadline for settling a final account, with a threat of adjudication first thing Monday if they didn't play ball - this is an account that has been dragging for months. The magic 'A' word did the business, account agreed and £40k in our account on Wednesday plus full retention release! Good end to a tough week.

On our biggest active job running at the moment I'm saddled with a spectacularly difficult QS. After the third consecutive month of having 'the pen' put through our interim applications I went over his head, called in the construction and commercial directors and said if it didn't stop immediately we'd become very contractual and shag their scheme. I dislike having to be overtly aggressive at work (it shouldn't be this hard, should it?) but it is working.

What winds me up more than anything else is that no value is attached to the work that we do. We carry out hand over cleans for any size company anywhere where they want us. We're the last people on site and if we do a shit job it reflects very badly on our client. I know we're bottom of the rung and we certainly don't need stroking but dictating prices for going over and over the same areas, doing work well over and above what was originally quoted because they think they can get away with it is just bang out of order. If I fuck up on pricing then that's my problem but I like to think we go that extra mile so a job can hand over. And then some arsehole QS starts arguing the toss and reckons a couple of quid on top of minimum wage is enough to pay a cleaning firm.

Argh! Nothing I can do about it now. Game of Thrones beckons...
