In my experience, I would budget $1200 to $1500 per year for things that can go wrong. Nothing more.

It sounds like a lot, but its nothing really compared to a car payment even if you don't make much. Don't go and blow it on strippers if you wind up spending less one year. It averages out to that amount

I bought an aftermarket extended warranty through the dealer for a very reasonable price. It is more extensive than the CPO and has no deductible for service done at that dealership (which I have a very good relationship with). I pretty much made back the entire cost of the warranty within the first year with an A/C evaporator replacement. So now if I use it again within the next 3 years, I'm ahead. If I had just put aside a couple thousand for repairs, I would've burned through it in one shot, and had to put aside more money for future repairs. Now I don't worry about it.

Who says I'm rich? Im a 19 year old full time student, who pays for the repairs,maintinance and gas myself.

Imo, extended warranty is a rip off. It helps the odd person out but it's a gamble. I'd rather take my 3 grand put it in a savings bank incase something goes wrong, then repair it myself if anything happens, if not, then I got 3 grand.

My CPO ended when I crossed the mileage at the beginning of the year. The only warranty repair that they made on the car was a blown out blower motor. All of my other repairs have been either through recalls or someone else effed something up and had to pay for it (Had a windshield company put a windshield in wrong and cause several thousand dollars in electrical damage when it leaked).

Most of the aftermarket warranties that I have seen are along the lines of 12month/12k miles and cost a few thousand dollars. I put 35k miles/yr on my car, I would be dumping $2-3k every 4 months on a new warranty... I think I wi stick to my out of pocket approach

Out of warranty, but with an N52 I'm not as worried as I would be if I was an N54 owner.

The deal I was quoted from BMW through Wells Fargo was 6yr 72K miles for $4,660 for their "4 star plus" warranty. They also gave me the option to finance it at 0% for 18mo, would have cost $258/month.

My car just had injectors go... $400 a piece for the part at the dealer. Thankfully I am good with my hands and have connections...

Basically what I have done with my last 3 BMW's is I structure the payments to end when the warranty ends or really near there. Then I take 50% of the payment and drop it into a savings fund for repairs, when a repair is needed I draw from the fund, if there's money left when I sell I use the fund for the down payment on the next one. I do however do my own maintenance whenever possible, IE do not need a lift, but have help as my son is a master tech for Hyundai and is very well acquainted with motor vehicles.
I good example of how it works is I'm almost at 100K, cars been paid off for a little over a year, I have @3300 in the fund. Car needed front brakes real soon, plugs, new front tires, alignment and the driver side door actuator is binding. I did all those for $835 in parts or fees(tires and alignment) and did it all on one Sunday. I'm going to do a brake fluid flush and coolant flush and should be good for another 50K after which I'll sell the car and have @$8K in the fund barring any unforeseen repairs. It just takes some discipline to always make that deposit.

I was quoted $2,500 for a 4 year warranty on my car. At 90k and 4 years left on my loan it doesn't seem like a terrible idea if I actually keep the car for 4 more years (which I won't).

For now I'm opting to maintain the car myself on my own dime while I save for an M3. However, for someone who will keep the car for 4 more years and put another 40k + on the car it's not a terrible deal. Turbo failure (beyond BMWs turbo warranty), water pump, emissions devices, suspension components, boost leaks caused by cracked parts... these can easily add up to more than $2,500 over time.

CPO expired never bought extended warrantee. So far $3k spent between a differential and water pump/therm. 06 65k miles. That would have been my cost of the warranty. so this far I broke even, anything from now on is extra. The diff was a fluke not sure why it went out and no one could explain either.

I own a 2010 335xi with 31k miles, warranty ran out a week ago. I believe that the only main issues with this car are the turbos and the HPFP and they both are covered by BMW until about 70k miles if I am not wrong.

Instead of "rich", how about "financially savvy"? You don't have to be wealthy to know that squirreling away money for a "rainy day" is probably a good idea.

Just that I don't know if personally I would be okay with purchasing this caliber of vehicle if I was going to sweat over any possibility of a couple hundred dollars or even couple thousand should something serious happen.

And by no means am I saying you should wipe your backside with a roll of 20's to own this car, but it's probably not the best choice if you're the type of person that puts a few thousand down and finances the remaining 30k of a used vehicle, only to be shaking in your socks in fear of the first repair.

Mind you, the chances of that are unlikely, although it seems to be the general consensus on this forum that if you keep your car 1 km past the warranty then it will explode as you sit in it.

Bought extended warranty two years ago. only waterpump failed. 2300 for warranty. probably only used 1000 worth of repairs. (includes free towing to dealership and bmw assist)

i did feel somewhat "safe" knowing that if anything did go wrong in those two extra years, it would be most likely be covered. Well that ended and now im screwed. No issues thus far, though should still bee able to get my turbos/fuel pumps replaced. they are still stock parts I believe.

No warranty since 50k miles currently at 165k miles. I do my own maintenance. My 2001 E-46 is at 200k miles 150K of that without a warranty.
