Question Auto dimming side mirrors retrofit

Is it possible to retrofit auto dimming side mirrors? Any harness, OBC problems?

I'm assuming you mean the side view mirrors on the doors? If so, I thought they were simply treated glass, no wire harnesses. Not sure though.

If you mean the rearview mirror, yes there is a harness needed.

If I could be sure it wouldn't trigger a bunch of codes in the software, I'd offer to trade you mine -- I hate the bloody things! Particularly at twilight, when it's hardest to see, the mirrors go dark and make it impossible.

And, no, as far as I can tell, there is no way to disable them or make the function switchable, which is what they SHOULD have done to begin with.

Isn't the auto dim on the door mirrors triggered by the sensor in the rearview mirror? I've never see mine dim independantly which makes me believe that there is just that one sensor that makes them all dim.

I have zero clue to what u guys are talking about. I have a 2006 USDM e90 330i w/o the zpp package and my door mounted side view mirrors ARE auto dim but I have the regular rear view mirror which I have to dim myself by turning the clown nose, which I am in the process of UPGRADING to the zpp rear view mirror which HAS the auto dim feature.

Whatever, sorry I just don't understand this post at all...

WOW, This is gotta be twilight zone for me...I must be high.

Do you mean the side view DOOR mounted mirrors that are NOT auto dim? If so, as I said, I think they are just treated mirrors and not electronically controlled, UNLIKE the auto dim REAR view mirror.

Again, I am not sure if the side view door mounted mirrors are electronic or not, but that is my guess.

Please tell me that I'm not speaking in tongues and that someone out there understands me.

they are different, not just treated glass at all :?

i dont want to get into another windy debate about right or wrong, if i have it wrong i apologise in advance.

But the electrochromatic function in the reflective material is electronicly charged. The mirrors wiring must be able to accomodate the function, same as if the glass has the heated function and so on.

The signal for the auto dip, i presume comes from the rear dip mirror, and if the car is fitted with this, then the function is also available for the side mirrors. I have vin decoded alot of cars, and ive seen many time the interior mirror with anti dazzle, but not the sides.. never have i seen side mirrors without the interior mirror

BMW doesnt supply the side mirrors with antii dazzle in retro fit.. but the interior mirror can be fitted with use of a cable loom, and the roof switch

Here is a link to the mirrors available depending on spec
http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E9...terior_mirror/

Here is a link to the retrofit cable needed to retrofit the EC mirror
http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E9...le_int_mirror/

Here is the link for the roof switch, dependant on spec again
http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E9...tch_unit_roof/

Here is a menupage showing the two different mirrors / glasses available
Please notice selection available for Regular and EC mirrors (s430a) / and folding (s313a)

http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E9.../vehicle_trim/

Like i say, im not trying to convince you either but if anything i was only trying to help the OP by saying the retro option is not available as a dealer part/set.

Please post up the last 7 ciphers of your Vin, so we can see what the external EC option number has, and if your car is actually fitted with it

Hope you dont mind we check this one out

Sorry was busy installing the OEM SSK in my car...love it!

Back to your question, the last 7 of my vin is...#AZ86448

Let me know.

As I said, I'm not 100% sure if I'm right , but this was never a contest, just us trying to help!

Either way, next mod is the ZPP rear view mirror!

I've got the ZPP rear view mirror on my list, I will get it soon (of course with the cable).

Thanks for your help!

I am looking to retrofit auto dimming door and rearview mirrors if possible. I drove a car with autodim and it's sooooooooo much better. Anyway it sounds like a lot of parts are needed. So far I am guessing it takes

Side view mirrors
Rear view mirror
Retro fit cable

the part I am unclear about is the roof switch. I have a moonroof (it's a 335i) but why would I need this replaced?

the roofswitch carries the function control for the rearview mirror. YouŽd need to get one that has the correct functions

there is no retrofit for the side mirrors, so not sure how youŽd get them to work

I've retrofitted a fully loaded review mirror with auto-dimming, homelink, and compass. The thing you guys are talking about is that to get the side mirrors to dim you have to tap into the wiring harness I believe for the rear view mirror. After looking at the rearview mirror retrofit and the plugs that are "missing" It seems VERY clear to me that there should 2 sets of wires from each side R & L that plugs into the rear view mirror plug ins.

Here's a wiring info from another vehicle. FYI: BMW kept the mirrors and plugs to be the exact same after 99.

'03 Oval Mirror with no Assist, no homelink (10 pin connector)
-----------------------------------------------------------
Pin 1 +12V when car is put in reverse, I believe so AD is disabled while backing up
Pin 2 +12V Constant source (Power "reciever" for remotes)
Pin 3 +12V Ignition source (Power AD circuitry)
Pin 4 O/S (-) Optical Sensor
Pin 5 O/S (+) Optical Sensor
Pin 6 O/S (-) Optical Sensor
Pin 7 O/S (+) Optical Sensor
Pin 8 ????
Pin 9 LED kathode (-) This is the clown nose LED
Pin 10 Ground

I believe that pins 4 to 7 are for the side mirrors of which you are speaking of.

NOW this brings me to the conclusion are the side mirrors the same aka stock? or do you have to upgrade to the electrochromatic ones...

So I searched it up via BMW Fans and this is what I found.
For my vehicle a 2006 323i the mirror itself according to the description you can put in the eletrochrom glass... I'm assuming all stock vehicles come with the blue glass.

1
Mirror glass, heated, plane, left
51 16 7 144 309
ELEKTROCHROM
... — '08, September 1 0.150 kg / 0.331 lb
€203.50
$272.71

3
Mirror glass, heated, convex, right
51 16 7 144 306
ELEKTROCHROM
... — '08, September 1 0.150 kg / 0.331 lb
€213.50
$286.11

It says "ELEKTROCHROM"!!!! SO now all you have to do is switch the glass to ELEKTROCHROM, and all you have to do is run the wire! (i think)

I need WDS or if someone can pull up a wiring diagram of the side mirrors I could LOVE to get this retrofit done if all it is, is a simple changing mirrors and running wires from mirrors to your rear view mirror.

BUT do we really want to run it to the optical sensor ports on the mirror? Does anyone else have any input or advise?

Thanks,
Steve
