New guy to BMW....

Hello everyone. I recently obtained a 2008 E92 335i and naturally I wanted to find out as much as I could about how to work on and modify such a nice car. (first car I have owned that is nice enough to be seen in...lol) so i found this forum. I am currently looking to get it diagnosed for a vibration at high speed (45-50 mph) that started over the weekend but beyond that it has been a blast to drive. I look forward to learning more about my car to fix as much myself as i can and hopefully bring some cool content to the forum. Here is a pic of it:

Welcome. I would start with an alignment and have your wheels checked for roundness and tires checked to. 90% it's one of these.

The vibration could be a balance issue or a bent rim, start with those 2 first. And congrats on the new car! Montego Blue is one of my fav BMW colors!

Fields of winter park is very good, ask for Jason Abromavage, I go to him all the time, he's amazing.

Also if work needs to be done, LillyAutomotive on the forums is very good! Great prices and he's very honest and he's mobile!

I had a gwc extended warranty. Its very important you contact them prior to bringing the car in for any warranty work you are looking to have done so it gets covered. I did cancel mine becuase I wasn't going to use it.

Just got my tires and alignment looked at today and all 4 tires were not balanced before install from the dealership i bought the car from. Luckily it was only a $40 fix. Now the ride is amazing. So naturally...i spent the rest of the day looking at mods... lol. I started looking at bimmian.com to get an idea of what kind of mods are out there. I am fairly new with bimmer mods and I am confused about "flashing" vs. "tuning". Are they one in the same or different? Also, can a stock setup be tuned/flashed to deliver more power without changing parts?

A flash is a re-write of the ECU to change parameters (boost, fuel, timing, etc.) and will increase the performance of your car, even if it is otherwise stock. If you add in more mods (upgraded FMIC, down pipes, etc.) and/or increase your octane (meth injection, E85 blends), you'll be able to run a stronger flash maps that will increase the power further. There are a couple ways to do this now, including a COBB AP (which offers off the shelf tunes and is also supported by "pro-tuners") and the BB Flash. The latter is free software you can download to your laptop and with the use of the Bavarian Technic cable you can communicate with the ECU. There are free maps out there that are designed to work with the JB4 (a piggyback tune).

The other method of tuning these cars are "piggyback" tunes. The most popular one currently being actively supported and continually developed is the JB4 by Burger Motorsports. These piggy back onto the ECU and intercept signals, altering them along some algorithm programmed into the piggyback box. These altered signals also result in increased performance as well. The JB4 offers some nice features, including on-the-fly map switching, gauge hijacking, and others that can be controlled from the steering wheel.

Each tuning method has advantages and disadvantages. Do some research and see which one you like the most.
