Is my turbo about to die?

Hi guys, I've recently bought an E90 320d 2007 pre lci. The car has 46000 miles on it, and since I picked it up I've been getting a siren like noise coming from the engine bay. A quick search on-line suggests my turbo is about to give up the ghost. Luckily the car is a BMW approved used, so comes with 1 years warranty. I would just like to get a few opinions from people who have experienced this problem before I go back to the dealer. I've made a short video of the noise. Please excuse the crappy quality.

Thanks buddy. I've emailed the video clip to the salesman I bought the car from, but today is his day off. Should hopefully hear something back tomorrow.

hmmmm, mine doesn't sound as bad as that I don't think but does seem to make bit of a whistling noise, can anyone advise how much 'whistling' is normal? my 330D (late 2007 pre LCI) is my first Diesel/first turbo'd car so no idea if it's not meant to whistle at all or if a bit is to be expected. Seems to drive OK but would be good to know ASAP if the turbo is past its best, maybe I should get a video together...

Definitely turbo. Mine did the exact same. Get it into BMW before the turbo disintegrates and wrecks the engine

Yeah had it replaced about a month ago. Bmw took it in as soon as they saw the video and replaced it no questions asked.

Hi all,

Mines started to sound the same, I've recorded a video this morning, sounds like its on the way out too

I have got the BMW performance kit fitted too, not sure if that would effect how the turbo sounds.

James.

OK, so turbo diagnosed as needing replacement. Getting a new turbo today within BMW AUC warranty. Well done BMW Williams Manchester. Car's got ~45k on the clock (out of which I've done ~600 miles tops)

a friend of mine is a tech at williams in manchester, its worrying how many diesel turbos he is replacing, 530d and 320d are the worst for it apparently

i wonder if the CBS has anything to do with it (ie. 18k oil changes on diesels)

It would be interesting to know some percentages of failures, as there are a massive number of 320d:s out there. On the other, so are VW 2.0TDI:s and I haven't heard of turbo problems in those cars. VW driver profile is probably different from a BMW one though.

When buying the car I thought 45k is nothing so wasn't initially worried about the whine but it's gotten worse quite quickly. Big thanks to Williams Manchester for dealing with the problem promptly.
