Checked level on dipstick below low level mark

Never checked oil level before just relied on service and oil light etc

1300mls 1 Litre of oil req,and will CERTAINLY pay more attn to oil level in future
i would pay attention mate, its your engines blood..

only check once the car has stood for 12 hours or so like overnight for instance for a 'true' reading, never check after driving it will always register lower

also where can i find out the oil pressure?

engines blood but its not RED!!

Go into I Drive settings, you will find it after about 45mins

According to the hand book leave for about 5 mins after a 5/6ml run on even surface, then take measure of the dipstick when oil is warm but settled

i wouldnt chap it wont give a proper reading, oil will still be in the head and aroudn the turbos, once she has sat for many many hours you will get a true representation on the dipshit of how much oil is sitting in your sump.

run her dry just once because she is low, even for a second when cornering will absolutely hammer the bearings.

Also does it give current oil pressure readings or just an ‘OK’?

I've thought about this when I first got my car - as i've always been used to dipsticks to check the oil not gauges. The oil level check function doesn't work till the car is warmed up.

It must reply upon sensors around the engine to do the electronic check.

I've been keeping an eye on the oil level every week since we picked the car up on the 1st of March. With 2275 miles on the clock the level had just reached the minimun mark on the dipstick. It took one litre to bring it back to the max mark.

Regards

Chris

All this has made me feel very guilty so I 've been out to the garage and checked the 335D oil level.
To be truthful I can't remember the last time I checked it, certainly wasn't in 2007. I did check it once a month when it was new and it hadn't used any.

Anyway at 9435 miles its exactly where it should be 3/4 way between the max & min grooves

So that's nearly 10K miles and hardly a drop used....combined with the 43mpg its returning I thinking I've probably been lucky with my example...
I did give it an easy time for the 1st 1500 miles. Perhaps this is one to keep for the long term? I might want a new car but certainly don't need anything else.

I drove a 56 plate Rx8 PZ last week and it felt totally gutless even when I gave it the big right foot. This car has only returned 22MPG average over its 25K miles. Its on to a new owner soon to be replaced by a VW TDi
The Rx8 needs litre every 1000 miles... nearly 2 stroke !

I read the manual (bored) the other day whilst eating my lunch in the car.

For vehicles with dispticks you are supposed to drive for 10 minutes (to warm up the engine) then park for 5 mins before checking the oil.

This suggests that the max / min marks on the dipstick are for a warm engine.

How fast or should I ask how slow you are driving? I have 335d coupe with 10000 mls or and best I get is 36 MPG and that is driving well within the speed limits (UK). On realy fast drives in Germany however I do get 33-34 MPG, so not much difference between hard and gentle driving. Any other 335d owners: what is your best - average-high consumption figures? 43 MPG way higher than even the BMW factory figures!

I've been thru this a few times..

I tend to drive as fast as the traffic allows over a 45 mile rolling route...that typically takes 50-55 mins in the morning, tad more on the way home. Including going thru 8 miles or so where the speed limit is 40 or less...average speed camera on another few miles @ 50

I think the reason i get such high figures is as follows...
A. rarely do I get caught in traffic as I'm travelling when the roads are quiet (5:30 -7:30am)
B. 15 miles of each journey tends to be at a steady 50 mph due to lorries..I typically see the mpg rise from 37 ish to 43 each time.
C. Within 60 seconds of leaving home/work I'm @ 60-70mph. So virtually no stop start which kills autos mpg
D. I rarely brake hard and accelerates hard as 1/2 the drive is a good mix of flowing corners...not much to overtake at 6am
E. Maybe I've got a good example of a 335D ??
F. Only use aircon on the very hottests of day as I hate the drying out effect

OBC is currently reading 44.8 mpg after 160 miles..now I will admit that has been gentle

if I use the MINI Cooper S I typically get 36-38 and when my wife had a 1.6 Mk4 golf if I used that I would get 45mpg.

Did only got 27-28mpg out of the Boxster S

Never been accused of being a tardy driver....but maybe I should have bought a 320D E92 ...but I got mine in launch week sept 06 so no smaller engined coupes. I did try a 320D M-sport saloon but TBH didn't like the 4 cylinder vibe
