Newbie Cat ?

Hey Guys,

I'm new to this forum, Im big into Landcruisers (ih8mud.com), but have limited knowledge of my 335i.

Can someone please tell me how the exhaust system is laid out on these cars? Im curious about the order that the cats, resonators, o2 sensors, etc are.

I want to do exhaust mods for more power, but want to pass emissions (using OBDII), so check engine lights have to be avoided.

Thanks

Wow, 19 views and no responses? That's messed up guys.

You've got cats on your downpipes and cats on your midpipe. The O2 sensors are at the ones on the downpipes. You can get rid of your midpipe cats without ANY error. However, replacing the midpipe won't get you the gains of replacing the midpipe.

A DIY solution using a setup of resistors can prevent the CEL from being thrown. There is premade wirekit from BurgerTuning that works (I have used it in the past). The current version of Vishnu's tune also has an option for an O2 fix.

Muffler-------- \-----CAT--------DOWN(CAT)PIPE---Turbo

Muffler-------- /-----CAT--------DOWN(CAT)PIPE---Turbo

If I recall correctly (I've had an aftermarket catback since 07), there is no separation between the OEM muffler section and the oem midpipes where the cats are. It's all one piece? (Someone will verify). Most aftermarket setups separate these though.

I've been trying to convince a few vendors to make some high flow catted midpipes so I can pass visual inspection without having to do the PITA that is the downpipe install. Maybe within the year we'll get it.

If you want to ensure you can pass visual without having to uninstall/reinstall a section of your oem exhaust (you only need 1 set of cats, so you could pick one), then replace your downpipes for maximum gain and leave the midpipe cats in tact.

If you're only worried about the CELs, there are multiple low cost (<$80) fixes that will make it no big deal.

Here's the best picture I could find in 20 seconds. This is an aftermarket setup but you get the hint.

No responses because he could just look under his car. Or look at a picture. Or because theres no point because he's not going to see any worth while gains with just an exhaust. Down pipes will give you a nice bump in power. You should probably read about them, since this is your first post and all.

Why do people think that someone should know about the search function as soon as they get on a website?

Because it takes less time to hit the search button than it does to register.

Why do you wait on vendors? You could easily do that yourself. Order some high-flow metal cats and replace the OEM ones with these.

I'll go down this route next spring - with high-quality race endurance metal cats from HJS (100 cells; they also sell 200 cells which are less expensive). They're quite expensive, though (1350 EUR for the two I'll need) but worth it. It will also improve the exhaust sound considerably.
