Thumbs up E92 LCI Tail-Light Coding Solution Found!

Hey Everyone,

I've talked to a few E92 owners here who are interested in doing the LCI tail light retrofit, and up until now we couldn't find a coding solution in HK. The retrofit kit is easily available from Valiant, but in order to make the LED's work properly, the FRM Module has to be reprogrammed.

BMW Hong Kong can do the retrofit, but they require that you upgrade to FRM 3, which is very expensive. Once you factor in their labor charges it becomes almost unthinkable.

Thankfully, after doing a bit of poking around on the coding sub-forum, I managed to find someone who is willing to help us do the coding remotely. All we need to buy is one US$100 cable which we can split the cost for equally.

Please PM if you are interested and would like more details

Hey Barton, unfortunately you're gonna have to stretch your budget a little bit more than that. We can definitely try to work out a group buy with valiant, but im pretty sure it won't bring the cost down to 2k

Here's the breakdown of costs:

Outer- $1,230 x 2
Inner - $930 x 2
Retrofit Cable - $350 (for both sides)
Install: Simple DIY (FREE!)

2007 and early 2008 builds may require Footwell Module FRM 3 which costs $2,200. I'm waiting to hear back from the guy helping us. I know for a fact that you don't have to upgrade if you have FRM 2.

Good News! Just heard back from the coder, you'll have error free LCI tails regardless of which version of the footwell module you have.

No need to spend $2,200 even if you have the first E92 ever built

Great, including the couple of couple of PM's I've received, that's 4 people who are seriously interested. I think if we can get it up to 5, Valiant might be willing to do a group buy (I haven't checked yet). It's already a pretty good deal though, I've checked around and no one is doing the entire euro retrofit kit for let than US$650.

Barton, congratulations on going FBO! Do your engine a favor and buy the CPS module

Excellent. With Scflaw, that's 5 people. I'll check with Valiant later today if they can give us a group buy deal.

You're still running a JB4, correct? Tuning a turbocharged car safely and effectively requires careful monitoring of a number of parameters. These include Boost, Air/Fuel Ratio's, and Ignition Timing. The JB4 relies on the DME's knock sensor to drop timing of the crankshafts in each cylinder under high load. That failsafe was designed by BMW for cars making stock power. However, cars running the JB4 under high boost are at a higher risk of Igniting prematurely because the pistons are not correctly positioned during the ignition cycle through the cylinder. This basically can cause uncontrolled explosions that have the potential to crack your cylinder heads and prematurely wear out your engine.

Your car is FBO, so I would highly suggest getting the Crank Position Sensor (CPS) module that BMS manufactures as an add on to the JB4. Even it you don't understand what I'm talking about, your engine will, and it will thank you

If any of you are considering tuning your N54/N55, do your car a favor and read through the tuning section carefully. If anyone needs basic help (I only have basic knowledge) you can PM me.

Yes yes, I understand what ur saying. How i mean, how does that module help? Does it help on controlling the timing of ignition? If it is just a sensor, how does it actually help? I know this topic has been discussed many times but is that the solution?

Yes, it's a solution..it's not the best, but since you already have a JB4, adding on the CPS module to your current setup is the only band-aid you have available. BMS should have included it from the beginning, but that's a whole other debate.

I'm not 100% sure how the current BMS JB4 CPS module works. The CPS module in the Procede is native to the tune and can adjust timing both positively and negatively depending on load conditions. I know that early applications of the CPS module for JB4 used on the N54 could only drop timing, and they didn't have a good understanding of how to offset effectively. i.e their cars would loose power because they were unable to match boost to timing properly. BMS has probably figured it out, but my understanding is that's it's still fairly crude compared to rewriting timing tables (Cobb) or the dynamic system in the Procede.
