I read all 30 pages of this post yesterday. Nobody helped out the guys so desperately asking for help for doing this mod to their E93 Convertibles.
I looked at my 335i E93 today and this is what I found.
Attachment 966309
I had the ignition off and pulled the hose off of the fitting first. When I pulled it off, there was a sound of air releasing like when a truck releases its air brakes.
I crimped the hose off with vise grips, started the car and hit the road. It seemed to sound pretty good. I stopped and reconnected the hose and removed the vise grips and continued to drive. At that point, I wasn't too sure that it made a change or not.
Has anyone else made any other attempts to get this to work on the E93's? Would someone else try what I did to confirm it works on doesn't work.
I did NOT throw a code by doing this!

I'm having a hard time putting the clip back on. Is there something I need to do? I faintly recall that u had to reset something. When I try to put it back myself it won't clip back in

Just did this on my IS. Love the extra growl from the exhaust. We'll see if the dealership flags any codes when I take it in for my first service.

Thumbs up Tried in '07 e93 335i (guess, should be similar for following years)

Please do at your own risk.
If I missed something or incorrect, please point out & would update.Thanks.
Believe this is the one we are looking for, in e93
  • In the driver side of the trunk, remove the three trim holder plugs (not sure of appropriate name - in the first picture below, two are encircled in orange and one is in the orange arrow direction holding taillight cover) Used a trim plug remover tool & a flat head screwdriver.
  • Remove the cover part behind the taillight (LCI taillight DIY could be referred for this - http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=676030).
  • Then starting from the taillight, just remove the overlap of the black weatherstrip until it's comfortable enough to pull the panel cover (not sure of appropriate name - in the first picture below, look in the area encircled in green over the panel covers) Then pull the the panel cover towards the passenger side.
  • You could see the actuator as in the second picture below (encircled in orange). Press the silver thing, pull it & should come out. If you pull hard, the bottom piece could come off with the holder pin but could put it back.
  • It's kind of little difficult to hold the panel & do this but should not take more than few seconds. You could also take the whole panel off & do or have someone hold it when you do.
  • Vice versa the steps to put back the panel & taillight covers or to plugin the actuator

I felt the difference in sound but put it back in (Based on personal preferences)

Wanted to try as I have been visiting this thread often and possibly this could be the solution for e93's.

I did this mod prior to installing my jb4. Is the actuator that we are disabling what controls the canflap? Or is that a totally different thing. I didnt feel like I could tell a difference in the sound when I changed the canflap setting in the jb4 when this mod was still done.
Main reason I ask is because when I picked my car up from the bodyshop today(rear bumper work) I noticed the compartment in the trunk was partially off and that they had plugged it back in.

I used this mod, then plugged it back in when I got the JB4. With the CAN flap setting open, it still makes a little "clink" noise when I first start up. I might just unplug it again - I hate that noise

Precisely. Although JB4 does cut the rattle short (to maybe half a second) before opening up

Yep. That's right. I use to have the actuator disconnected. Then I installed JB4 and set CANFLap On. Less rattle but still... so I bought a PE exhaust

you can't compare, neither price nor functionality. For people who just want to control the flap wireless it's a pretty nice gadget. Not everyone want's to have a JB4 ...

I'm having issues passing smog. I have this mod enabled (cables disconnected). Could this be the reason why my CA Smog emissions test is failing?

Does this do anything to an after market exhaust on the car? I did it to mines, it think it made my exhaust a bit quieter.

I don't know how Cali emissions work. However in WA State they plug in to your OBDII and that's where they get their data.

It's possible that the OBD II is throwing some sort of Emissions/Exhaust code, because things ARE unplugged after all.

However, if they are not just plugging in to the OBDII then I don't know for sure, but I'd say NO, it's not related to the plug being pulled.

Just one data point to add... I've had mine unplugged for 4000 miles, and amazingly these are the consequences:

The exhaust is louder
My engine has not been destroyed
My cats did not explode
My tailights did not go out
My dealer did not void my warranty
My car did not fail emissions inspection
My car did not gain or lose power

I must be the luckiest guy in the world - I beat the golf tee Gods! Man, I should go get a lottery ticket!
I haven't wanted to say this cause it's just kind of mean. But thank you. Thank you for pointing out some of the silliness around pulling a plug to a flap at the ass end of your exhaust.

Going on my second E92, a 335is at 8K miles, still no concerns, just a little tiny bit more noise down low and around town, otherwise... Nothing.

Raised eyebrow from my SA cause they found it unplugged and were really confused and apologetic that it had been delivered that way. After my explanation I received a "Oh Cool, that works?" nothing more.

Thx all for this thread. I hadn't done this mod because I didn't mind the sound at startup but my 335i has started to have the flap rattle during normal driving (must be a vacuum leak...I eyeballed what I could see but don't feel like tracing the whole vacuum lines out just for this!) so I pulled the plug. Awesome! I haven't driven it on the highway yet so am not sure if the reported "drone" will annoy me but not having that rattle is great. Thx!

This took honestly 2 minutes to complete. Pop off the door in the trunk, unplug the connector, and put the door back on. Done. Definitely a difference in exhaust note on start up. I did not notice a difference in power. If anything it just feels more linear to me.

I am under the impression that the loss of power is a myth. It would make sense to me that if the exhaust is able to flow smoothly that the turbos should actually take less time to build boost, but that's just my opinion.

It will also eventually show a Check Engine Light of some type. I did this and after a while, don't remember how long, there was a warning on the dash. I didn't know what it was so I took it to the dealership (I was under warranty). After a few hours, they called me to tell me the car was ready and explained that somehow this plug in the trunk came undone! "I wonder how that happened" I said... Anyway, that's my story.
