One of the reasons I bought a Passat over the Jetta was cuz the Jetta only had a 14.5 gallon fuel tank where the Passat has 18.5 gallon fuel tank. I routinely refuel at around 775-825 miles...about every 8-9 work days. Just don't what all the hoopla is about the Cruze.

impressive ressults I would lean in favor of the Cruze BUT!!! this is a new engine here to the states therefore CAUTION flag!!! The VW has a proven engine, but damn the 100 miles per tank on the Cruze makes anyone wonder!!

I believe the Cruze engine is a common one used in Europe and built in Germany.

Meh. These cars make me yawn. I wanna see some action on the upcoming Mazda6 diesel. Now that one has real potential.

A Fiat factoid about the 2014 Chevy Cruze diesel
The American Cruze diesel has an Italian engine, by way of Germany
---
The Chevrolet Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel (say that three times fast) is finally here. European diesel fanboys can finally celebrate the introduction of another oil-burner to joust with the likes of the VW Jetta TDI.

The diesel Cruze we get, however, will be a different beast compared to the one sold in the rest of the world. For starters, we won’t get the 1.7L diesel or the Daewoo-derived 2.0L desel engine. What we will get is a 2.0L diesel that’s actually made by Fiat.

Just over a decade ago, GM and Fiat attempted a merger that ended up going sour. One of the vestigial limbs of that arrangement was a powertrain partnership that still exists as a GM facility in Turin, Italy. This partnership builds a number of engines at a German plant, including the aforementioned diesel. In Fiat parlance, it’s known as the JTD-series, while GM calls it “Family B”.

So why the Italian engine instead of the Daewoo mills that have won praise in the European motor press? The answer, as with most things in this business, lies in regulatory matters. The Family B engines can already meet the stringent Euro VI emissions standards, which go into effect at the end of this year. Our own Tier 2 Bin 5 standards are equally tough. Current examples of Euro models that employ the 2.0-liter Family B turbodiesel include the Opel Astra and insignia, as well as the Chevy Malibu.

GM spokesman Tom Read told us via email, "The U.S. Cruze diesel is based off the Fam B architecture. This was the best engine family to start from and quickest to be able to adapt the engine for the U.S. market requirements including altitude calibration, emissions, diagnostics and environmental. This was not a change. Fam B has been the choice since deciding to go with a U.S. diesel."

The lack of an automatic gearbox to go along with the Family Z engines might have had something to do with it as well. The American Cruze diesel only comes with a 6-speed automatic—not our choice, but one that suits the tastes of pretty much everybody else in this market.
