@lawwailok is at the exhaust shop right now so I'm uploading this for him. This is a PE taken apart, on the passenger side. I will update this post as necessary.
FYI: On the solid pipe side of the Performance exhaust, there is NO packing. Only the side where the perforated. And the packing looks a bit different from OEM. All credits go to @lawwailok |

thank you @blisstik for uploading the picture. we are taking out all packing and covering up half of the perforated pipe and sealing up the passenger side muffler. probably same goes to driver side

Yes sir, the stock has two perforated pipes, and packing on both sides of the passenger side muffler.
It will be interesting to see what is on the inside of the driver side muffler. And once again, thanks for taking the initiative to get that PE opened up! We appreciate it. |

OK guys, its somewhat maybe disappointing you guys here but I'm running out of time and talked to the muffler guy, we agree that let's drive around with the passenger side modded first and see what kind of sound impact it does by the mod. and we will go onto the driver side in the future.

So straight pipes in both mufflers with some packing tucked next to the perforated pipe to absorb drone sounds like it may be the winning combo. I think this plus an X-Pipe and a secondary cat delete would probably sound fantastic. |

I had the PE. I'm willing to bet that the driver and passenger side is the same.
My thoughts: Passenger side - Remove the outer perforated pipe, weld in a straight pipe and remove the packing (just like the PE). Remove 50% of the packing on the inner side and leave the perforated pipe alone Driver side - Remove the mini resonator, weld in a straight pipe and remove the packing. Remove 50% of the packing on the inner side and leave the perforated pipe alone. That should produce a close result to the PE. It should be just as loud as the PE, but I am thinking that it will sound slightly different since the PE uses different materials. |

I'm just glad lawwailok was even willing to cut up his expensive PE exhaust for everyones benefit...he helped us greatly in finding out at LEAST half the equation... So on that note, Happy Lawwailok Day everyone!! (although it was shortlived haha)

Damn, this is exciting. Haven't seen so much progress in the entire life of this thread up until this point. Between lawwailok opening the PE and whitefury's findings. Thanks guys.
The thing is I noticed that most of you guys have an e90, will this be the same for the e92? I say this because I think I recall the e92 exhaust being a little different than the e90?

I have done 2 mufflers this last 2 weeks. Its 100% that my findings were on point. BMW has tricked us.
Just leave the connector pipe alone, remove only 20% of packing to use with the 25% of packing from passenger side and use that on the driver side. The packing doesnt affect the out of car sound. It only reduces unwanted cabin noise. My method gives the benefits of the PE exhaust with NO cabin noise. Plus its alot less than $1300.

ok just got back to work and figured might as well wrap up what we did today before i have to work on the store stuff. we took out ALL packing from the section of the cross pipe, and covered top 1/2 of the perforated pipe and left the bottom half perforated.
what i can tell so far from a 20 mins driving; 1. it didn't change the original tone of the PE 2. it is definitely a bit louder but not crazy loud, i'll say 1-10 scale, PE is at 5 and just mod the passenger side is somewhat 6.5? 3. no drone 4. it pops more pronounce i'll drive it a few more days and listen to it. hopefully can record some in-cabin video when im going home tonight as well as cold-start.

thanks for all the words guys. it's my pleasure to unveil some "secret" from bmw department. so it's no rocket science now... im sure all you guys running stock can magically turn it into a "PE" now (well at least passenger side, i'll try to find time to open the driver side soon to unveil the rest of it).
oh damn... now my PE isn't worth shit since everyone can have their own PE!!! hahahaha, i can't sell mine for shit now.... damn myself! jk it always feel good to help out the community and try out something new
