4 Bent Rims and no accident

I know that there is a wheels and tire forum but this general forum gets much , much more exposure.

I have a 330xi with the OE rims and tires. The car currently has 1500 miles on it. I picked it up on Dec 23rd of last year. I live in a northern suburb on NYC. Starting 2 weeks ago the car seemed to be pulling a little bit to the right and the steering wheel was cocked to the right a bit. There is also a vibration that can be felt in the car and in the gas pedal at highway speeds.

I brought the car into the dealership (Wide World Odf Cars in Spring Valley, NY) this morning, 2-13-06. They tell me all FOUR of the rims are bent. Two of the 4 are not salvagable. I was NOT in an accident. I didn't hit anything. Not even a curb. Just normal NYC area driving. Nothing to speak of that would cause this much damage. Now how the heck is this possible??? This happened before the recent snowstorm and I was not even out in it. The car was in the garage the whole weekend.

I can't make an insurance claim as it won't make sense with my deductible and all. My insurance agent says the my insurance will go up $140 every six months if I make a claim. So much for insurance.

After speaking with the service manager and the shop foreman, we decided to replace the 2 worst rims and put two of the "better" rims on the rear, then do an alignment. This will cost over $1200. The Style 159 rims are $500 a piece. They said if I was still unhappy with the ride of the car that they would go to BMW for assistance to help defer cost to replace the other 2 rims. Yeah right. if that is the case and they do help, i will be very impressed.

How are others in the NY, NJ and CT area faring?

Any help, ideas or comments are greatly appreciated.

wow. That really sucks. I dont understand how that would be possible. Maybe the wheels were slightly damaged during delivery and then threw rotation of the wheels it got worse and worse.

I am very sorry to hear that. Sounds like a warranty claim to me if all 4 wheels are bent. In my opinion, if you didn't get into an accident or hit anything, these wheels were defective from the beginning. I don't think you should have to pay a DIME and BMW should replace/repair your wheels at no charge. If you don't get this resolved through your dealer you could call BMWNA (1-800-831-1117) and speak with them about your situation. Just my 2 cents. Hope all is well in the end and be sure to enjoy your xi to its fullest potential.

My e46 had 3 bent rims also. Never an accident. Just Chicago streets.
I had 2 broken steel belt too, had to replace the tires.
Another good reason to trade in my e46
I'm really going to try to take it easy in the city with my e91, I'll be that guy that everyone hates, going 5mph over bumps.
Sorry to hear that about you wheels.

maybe one of those pot holes in nyc caused it? it may not be noticeable visually but the damage could have been sustained in the inner wheels. did u ask the dealer to have it replaced under warranty? from what ur stating the damage was not caused by u or normal wear and tear, then in that case it could only be a defect from the manufacturer. i would definitely try and push for warranty claim if u didn't cause the damage.

Hey I do that, esp on rough RR tracks, I go over slow, it's amazing how many people dont give a ****, they just blast over those things, you can see the tires just jumping up and down, they have NO CLUE why I slow down, some people just don't get it.

onefish2--who is your insurance company? They must be giving you a real good deal on insurance to have to hear something like that. As far as the rims go...it doesn't make any sense to me either that all 4 rims are bent, it make me wonder if you ran over something big, which of course you would know, rims were defective from the factory or your rims got bent on the boat and just became worse over time....Any way I know that sucks big time. Now who is your insurance company again?

Maybe someone else drove it.

Do you have teenage kids or better yet did you park it at a lot?

Some people will do anything to drive a BMW.

My insurance company is Allstate. I am paying about $1200 a year for the BMW. I have two other cars on the policy as well as my house. I have all kinds of pakckages that keep my insuance low. No accidents for 10+ years etc. My wife backed into someone over the summer and that claim was $1200. But that did not affect my insurance policy. What my agent is saying is that if I do submit a second claim so soon, that new claim would cost me more insurance premium wise in the long run than to just pay it up front myself..

I do not have the sports package.

That totally sucks, it is tough living in a city that gets snow as the roads are in pathetic shape. I live downtown Chicago, have had my car three days and already hit a pothole that made me and my wife jerk forward in our seats (hope there was no damage, nothing visible). Perhaps you could ask your dealer about the tire and wheel insurance after you get your new rims to try to avoid paying for this type of thing in the future. I bought the package to avoid paying $700 for a new tire and rim when I hit the inevitable crater in the road that exist all over Chicago (I bent two rims in my previous car driving in Chicago and had to submit two insurance claims, I have State Farm and did not get an increase in my premiums even though the two claims were within about nine months of each other). BTW - the dealer has some ability to bargain a little for this package, they originally quoted me $539 for the package for five years protection but then knocked it down to $499 by the time I left the business office. Sorry to hear about your troubles.

I hit the sickest pothole in the world doing about 45-50mph, no damage to my 161 wheel.

I couldn't believe it wasn't bent/damaged. The alignment seems fine (this was about 2 weeks ago, so no problems yet)

So I say OEM wheels are strong, and that batch of 159's must just be defective.

I do not have the sports package.
Evenso, you have to have 17" wheels and there isn't a lot of rubber on those wheels. Seems strange that all 4 would be bad though.
Having lived in NY for most of my life, I do know the roads can be very bad, especially in the spring time when the warmer weather starts to kick in. I've bent several 16" wheels while I was up there.

When you bought your bimmer, did they try to sell you insurance? Just curious.
