e92 320d fuel economy
Hi guys, im getting around 30mpg while driving in town and some driving on roads with max 50mls.
I know I wont reach the BMWs 41mph, but was expecting a bit more when I sold my 325i which gave me 22mpg on the same roads. What are you guys getting and what can this be down to? cheers |

I've got a 2010 320D and I get around 43 average. Get around 50-55 with some longer journeys. 30 seems quite low, but if it's all small trips it will be.

I have just reset the average mpg and speed. I believe though it was below 30mls. I will go for a 50 mls drive on A3 tomorrow, so I`l see what Im gonna get on a motorway. And will have a close look on the coolant temp

so had a 50 mls journey yesterdsy with speeds up to 60 onA406, few stop & gos. With everything reset I got average 38.1 , with average speed 28mls.
The coolant however dint cross the 89C. It went quickly to 80C. When stationery, still didnt go above 89C. Is that ok? Or do I need a thermostat change? |

89C seems ok, mine runs between 89 - 92 & I usually average around 47 mpg with 50 - 55 on the motorway, but I'm rarely in queues or heavy traffic.
50 miles, up to 60 mph, stop go & average 28 mph doesn't sound the most economical of journeys but 38 still seems a little low. Do you have a manual or auto, if it's the latter you're probably not that far out. |

I think 30 in a 320D is on the low side. I'm running a 335d and average mid 30's depending on how I drive it.
I was getting poor mpg I did a little digging about on forums and found most people say the car should run about 90c. So I took it out for a spirited drive in sport mode I did manage to get the car to 90c but it went back down to 75-80 almost immediately. I had both thermostats in the car changed at my local garage cost me just over £200 with the antifreeze change using genuine BMW parts. The car now runs at 90 without pushing it. My MPG and range have gone up too. last tank was 450 miles the previous tank was a little over 300. Yes its a lot of money for two thermostats but its paying off in fuel saving alone, plus I wondered if the car wasn't getting to temp if it would cause a problem with the DPF not doing a regen cycle. You could try just changing the EGR stat first which would save you some money. My EGR stat was just over £30 at the steelers Last edited by slidingsideways; 12-31-2014 at 12:17 PM.. If that does not help, just disconnect it and go for a drive. If the car feels the same and you get ~the same MPGs, then your MAF is just dead (mine went up to 35-38 from 25-27).

My average speed on commutes (20 miles a day) is 17mph, and yet I'm averaging around 45 mpg
My drive down from manchester to london at christmas, with 1.5 hours in stop start traffic at vauxhall averaged me 53mpg I think you care has issues although it sounds like the culprits (temp sensors / MAF) have been covered. My only other thought is a boost leak from somewhere. I had this on one of the two 2002 VM Golf 130PDs I had, which resulted in a 10% difference in MPG but no engine management lights |
