BMW has been building cars in SA since the '70's - long before the Euro existed. You can Google the Rosslyn website to learn the history of BMW in SA.

While my '08 328i was built in Regensberg, my previous BMW - an '03 E46 - came from Rosslyn. I have no statistical reliability data on SA-built cars, but my anecdotal experience with the car was quite good; my '03 had only one minor problem during my five years of ownership.

What about the E93? I have one being built 4 FEB 08 and thought it would be built in Munich? The dealer here at Pentagon did not refute this assumption. I wil be picking-up the car in K-town.

I believe that all E93s (like the E92) are built in Regensberg (and only in Regensberg).

I have yet to hear of a SA built BMW in Canada. Even for the 3er sedans, they mostly seem to be from Munich Plant.

BMW plant in SA is full manufacturing facility not just an assembly point. Those guys have invested in millions of dollars in the plant and I am sure the plant same Quality assurance methods as Germany plants. Nobody seems minds that most of our every day needs things (some very crictial) are made in China. Everybody knows China track record. I don't mean to offend anyone

Nothing magic about German assembly except perhaps in the tiny, narrow minds of a few bigots. Some of whom probably drive US-built X5s and such, too.

The issue isn't "magic" or "bigot[ry]" but rather money.

Regardless of the value you personally may ascribe to 'built-in-Germany' BMW absolutely charges all of their customers a premium for that appellation. In fact they are counting on their customers responding to it.

The vast majority of BMW's customers are far more aware that they are buying the hippest German car than they are of BMW's sporting and racing history or how modern and advanced the SA plant may be.

Personally I would have no problem with a BMW made in SA as long as BMW was giving me a rebate for not being made in Germany - not because I am overly concerned with the car not being made in Germany, I just don't want to be charged for something I am not receiving.

I bet the process and manufacturing is the same in germany as SA, just in SA its a south african at the controls. I'm sure BMW has quality control procedures and have paid some executive LOTS OF MONEY to be stationed there to make sure everything is the same no matter where its built.

I believe the QC is all the same in every plant.. just how the owners feel.

Does anyone know for sure whether Canada gets SA cars or not ?

No, it's not being built - or rather it wasn't built - in Munich, sorry.

if you compare a Germany produced bimmer vs a SA built bimmer, you will see the difference but otherwise you wouldn't. it's a great car nevertheless but there are differences in quality

Which is higher quality, one built in Germany or SA?
