My car got its snow tires put on by me (was complaining that I shouldn't drive with summers with temps below 30F and it freaked out when it started flurrying), and also one new 921 bulb that cost me $2.50 plus tax. Cars are way too spoiled nowadays, owners need to show them some tough love.

Rear fog lights...
Spent some time (between meals) working on cutting out a plastic cork in the form of the white piece that is already in place for the front fog lights. More in the DYI section.

Use your rear fogs ONLY when visibility is less than 50m (150ft), or else you're up for a big fine here in Europe (€200 or $250), AND annoy all other drivers who are blinded by the bright red rear lights. Heavy fog happens every so often overhere, which literally makes it impossible to see the road and forces you to drive about 25 mph max. Otherwise, leave the lights off, because it's really annoying for others and just a "show off" action to have them on...

I respect the European way of thinking (such as you must drive with a M+S tire during the winter, and a three mountain peak symbol recommended), believe me, we can't handle rear fogs here in the USA. The biggest offenders are Jaguars and Audis, who drive around with them at all times. They look as if the driver is braking while going down the highway.

Fines? We're a society who is against red light cameras and speed cameras, where fines are issued to people who run red lights and exceed the speed limit. We would never put up with being fined for using a fog lamp when totally unneeded!

I was with you up until this point. We're also a society who allows automated enforcement of speed limits not set per accepted engineering guidelines and penalizing people who run red lights when the yellow interval doesn't give them time to stop. Whenever you see automated enforcement, there's a good bet that it is a SCAM and you probably ought to investigate more. Virginia is one notable exception to that rule - we don't do speed cams here and the red lights ones by law must have the yellow interval measured and it must comply to ITE guidelines. (not everything here is messed up...)

Seriously, automated enforcement is one of those things that looks good on paper but for many reasons, once you look deeper into it it smells like corruption and quite simply, it's an attempt (successful apparently) by unethical private businesses to make money under the guise of safety while actually profiting off of engineering mistakes that make our roads less safe.

I hear you, and from your sig I believe you are basically in the DC metro area, so you know firsthand about RLCs and speed cams. I'm a little more negative towards the speed cams, because sometimes we all know that there are 25 mph roads where you can easily do 50 and it's not actually a problem.

The thing is, red light cams do not make any mistakes. You were either before the stop line when the light turned red, or you weren't. It is physically impossible for a camera to take a picture of your car having not reached the stop line, when the light turned red, if it didn't happen.

imho, I think there are cases of where in small towns yellow lights have been tinkered with, and even cases in corrupt places like Newark, NJ, but those actions have been reversed.

I always looked at it as if you have an opportunity to have more than $500 in fines just going to work, if you run lights and speed. Nobody can afford to do that 5 days a week, 4 weeks in a month, 52 weeks in a year. So what happens? Behavior changes.

When I'm in DC, I see people observing the limits, and stopping at red lights. Mission accomplished. I mean DC publishes the location of every camera, they aren't hiding them (except with mobile units).

In my lifetime, I've only gotten one ticket from a cam, and it was when I ran the light in 2002. Oddly, I did about 41 in a 35 in DC, and did not get a ticket. Urban legend says they only allow 4 over, unlike MD, which allows 11.

I should like to feel that speed and/or red light camera's are more accurate than the average police officer. No offense please, but a human error is easily made. If you have doubt about a camera picture you can request the official "calibration report" that must not be more than one year old (at least in The Netherlands). What's wrong with a camera that give you a fine if you really run a red light? I mean, it was red for longer than 1 complete second before your front bumper crossed the line at the intersection? And what is wrong for with a speed camera that gives you a fine when you speed more than 10mph at a busy highway during rush hour? Of course we shouldn't send a fine for someone speeding 3 miles over the limit. That, typically, was unintentional.

Camera's should not be installed everywhere. Camera's should be installed at those traffic lights where people notoriously run red lights and/or accidents have happened in the past. Similarly to those installed on high ways. Let's face it: If we'd all stick to the limit in dangerous areas we'd have a lot less accidents. And then, I'm sure the police would be a bit more "easy going" when we speed 12 miles over the limit on an interstate.

I can't stand those State Troopers that just sit in the middle of nowhere "waiting for a target". Let them focus on those who speed around busy highway intersections, people that drive without thread on their tires, people that drive cars without working lights, or those that drive with their rear fog lights on without reason...

But who am I? I guess I'm glad I'm not a State Trooper... No offense please for those on this forum who are . I've have yet to meet a nice one, so please introduce yourself!
