Air Intake Charcoal Filter

Does anyone know why BMW chose to add a charcoal filter to the engine air intake? I'd assume it's located after the air filter since it's not replacable.

I can understand having it on the cabin air filter, but have no idea why it would be added in addition to an engine air filter.

It prevents harmful emissions from escaping the engine when your car is off.
