RE01R vs Direzza Z1 Star Spec

Hey,
This last track weekend completely destroyed my RE01Rs. I currently have 245/45/ZR17 on my car and love them to death. They get sticky as all hell and lasted me 6 HPDE days and I think....8 autocrosses or something like that. They will probably last one more autocross which is fine with me and then after that autocross (8/10) I want to swap them out for 255/40/ZR17 before my 8/23-24 NASA weekend and 8/27-28 days with the CCA.

I love the RE01R, they are the best tires I've ever driven on. However, the Direzzas are getting some attention and they are a good $60 less per tire. Does anyone have first hand experience with both? The money really isn't a problem if the RE01R will definitively perform better. Oh and just to clarify, by perform better I really care more about performance on the track. I'm sure both are worthy tires in an autocross setting but I need these tires for 6 more HPDE days this year.

Another thing is that I really really don't want to move to R Compounds yet. I would like to remain on street tires as long as I can manage, which I think waiting until next spring will suffice. At that time I'll also be moving up to 18" wheels so...for now I'm going to stick with street 17"s.

Let me know,
Dave

EDIT: So since the Direzzas are on Backorder the choices are now RE01R and Advan Neova...

Most people are very pleased with the Direzza performance. I know they were on a 3-4 month national backorder about a month ago.

FYI: check sizes for the direzza. Not all are on backorder. My track wheels are the Kosei K1's in 17x8.5, and sizes to fit that rim are still available I believe. Absolutely love the tire. Stiffer sidewalls than the RE-01Rs.

The only one available for 17x8.5 not on backorder is 245/45/ZR17 which is what I currently have. Considering my understanding is that the Direzzas sidewalls are softer than the RE01R I'd like to go to a 255/40/ZR17, which is not available :-/

Tirerack reports the sidewall is STIFFER on the direzza than the RE-01R. Check out their review. Based on my experience with the Direzza, they are extremely stiff and have very little roll in corners (even while warming up!). I'm running 245's and they could not have performed better.

Alright fine you guys win. In a 245/45/ZR17 fitment, the Direzzas come in at only $135 a tire, which I just can't pass up. I'll leave those on until they're bald at which point I'll switch to 18" R Comps Thanks!

Im running 255/40R17 Direzzas and I love them. I dont have the experience that you do but couldnt be happier. I even shocked my instructor when I told him they were street tires. He asked me at least four times if they were R compounds.

I would say a shade less stiff than the run flats, but it's honestly hard to tell. I don't drive my car on the street with the run flats like I drive my car on the track with the direzzas. I don't push my street tires enough to really feel a ton of roll through corners. After the direzzas heat up (so far 38psi has been about the sweet spot for me), the roll is almost nonexistent and they grip like hell. At 40psi I've found the direzzas to start getting greasy. Above 40 I had to pit in and let a few lbs out or I was pushing the fronts all over the place.

FYI: my cold pressures were 28 front, 30 rear. That put me right at 38-39psi hot all around.

Interesting, thanks for your feedback. The OE tires just don't roll over and I am really enjoying the turn in feeling of those tires. Grip seems comparable to Falken RT615, and they don't seem very sensitive to heat. I think I might be sticking with the OE tire

I'm running the Z1 star spec in 235/40/18 and 265/35/18...very happy with the performance in autox. I know thats alot of stagger for racing but I also have H&R sway bars so I figure a non-stagger setup will make it too tail happy...

There're some understeer due to these tires even with sway bar upgrade...but I'm guessing the stagger will work better on a track (haven't been to track day with these yet)

The direzzas perform much better on track than the OE tire!!! Plus they're $135/tire not $300/tire.

Todd,

Thanks again for your feedback. I don't mean for this to come the wrong way, but did you verify this by using the OE RE050A II tire on the same track you used the Direzza?

Thanks,
Nick

the best tire is the BFG G-FOrce KD for track and autocross. decent price too. BFG is owned by Michilin.

NO. I did this by repetedly passing a guy in a 335i on the same track running stock RFT tires. He came over and commented to me after one of our runs and asked if I was running R-comps because he couldn't hold traction through some of the tighter turns at the speed I was taking them. Part of it could be due to the non-staggered setup I have now too, but in general I think the direzzas hold a bit better than the Bridgestone RFTs.

I recommend Yokohama's. I have Advan A048's (r-comps) and they are excellent. For street tires, I recommend the Advan sports.

Hmm soo many recommendations. I think that considering I am basically just planning on burning these tires I will go with the Direzzas as they are cheap and perform damn well. Next year I'll move to R-Comps, idk Yokohama or otherwise but the Advan's are just too expensive for what I need this year.

Thanks for all the help!

I second the recommendation on the A048's for when you move up to R-comps. I'll be moving to the A048's when the Direzzas are shot. I drove my father in-law's 996 C4S at watkins glen on A048's and it was simply amazing. The tires just have endless grip.
