JB2 -> JB3 review

I just removed my JB2 and put in the JB3, no other mods on the car (I have the BMS intake sitting in the garage waiting for a little more time to put it in).

The power seems very smooth, just insanely strong - 60-100 happens in no time. I haven't pushed it too hard, just driving around town with a few bursts, but I definitely like it more. Tomorrow I'll get in some more high-speed action and try out the launches.

The install itself was very easy (even with non-PNP) - not having to mess with vacuum lines will make this MUCH easier for anyone that didn't already have a JB2, but for me that was half of the install time (resetting the lines to stock from the JB2 config). There are a lot of wires, but that only takes a few minutes to do and there's nothing tricky in the whole process. Of course, I'm hating the idea of taking it out and putting it back in again for my next service, but that's many months ahead.

Any ideas what 100 octane will buy me in HP vs. the 93 I'm usually running? There is a gas station very close to me that has 100 for $6.99/gal, so I can easily splurge every now and then...I'll test it in a week when I need my next fill, but I'd love a guesstimate .

It would take time for the ECU to get used to the higher octane so you may have to run it for at least a tank to make sure you maximize the power... ie before track time... I would imagine only a couple of horses unless JB3 increases the boost a couple of psi sensing the higher octane. Each psi = 10whp as a rule of thumb... So hook up a boost gauge and see if your boost increases with higher octane. I don't think it would though

If you mix 100 Octane into 93 Octane to make say 95-96 Octane you'll see roughly 6-8 rwhp gain.
If you go straight 100 Octane you should see about 15+ rwhp gain at most.
At that point the stock intake is your restriction to making the higher octane see full benefit.
And you don't need a tank full for the adaptation to occur.
it's almost immediate.
Just put it in and go drive around for 5-10 miles doing some WOT and high rpm runs.
You'll be good to go.

But to be honest, unless you are going to the track, the fact you have 93 Octane in your state, already is a great thing.
That alone is good for about 5-6 rwhp over 91 Octane.

15-20hp from just a small bump in octane...

Rick, just to be clear, the dyno you linked shows the increase from 91 to 95/96 Octane WITH an intake too.

See my post above for a more accurate representation of what increased octane on a tuned only car would be.

To recap:
91 to 93 Octane will give you 5-6 rwhp on average.
93 to 95/96 Octane will give you another 6+ on average.
91 to 100 Octane will yield 15-18 rwhp on average.

And as I said above, adding an intake, DP's and to a less extent exhaust with the octane increase will yield even more.

After a day: the car is more sedate down low, much more linear increase in power as you press the throttle down. I like it. Once you hammer it, the car explodes, found myself giggling like a school girl when I was finally able to open it up on a fun stretch of road today .

Once I do the intake, I'll load up some 100 octane and see how it feels with both mods and the gas - 5% more power isn't worth the extra $$ for gas, but I'll do it once .

Thanks!

Is the increase in performance only noticeable at 60+? Would I notice any increase from 0-60?

ITs a blessing and a curse having a Sunoco 100 octane pump 1/4 mile from my house.

It's very noticeable at any speed, the big difference from JB2 to JB3 is how smooth it is now and how much power you get at higher RPMs. If you rarely hammer that throttle, you'll feel a difference from stock (nice and subtle), but if you hammer it at the stoplight, you'll be AMAZED at how fast you get moving... Once it breaks 4000RPM or so, it's REALLY on, enough where if you have traction (the stock RFT's have horrible traction, fyi) you'll be pinned back and the front end lifts up a bit and you're OUTTA there.

approx ho many driving hours before your car was fully adapted to your JB3??

thanks

It's faster immediately, who knows how long before it's "fully adapted"...I've seen posts from the 2 people that would know saying 3 WOT pulls will do it, not hours of driving or tanks of gas.

who knows is correct, different circumstances probably means different adaptation time... it took a few days (3rd day) for my car at high altitude to fully adapt.

i think it is adapted now BUT:
my car seems to pull in third and fourth gear quite strong, but first and second gear is note as strong relatively...

how about you other JB3 guys ?? similar experience??

But how do you know it has adapted? Butt dyno is not reliable... Just drive . I'm getting a boost guage in there at some point (either Terry's or the Rix one, can't decide) to validate that everything is going okay, but otherwise I just know that the added power makes me giggle.

IMHO do not go too long without any boost gauge if u have any type of tune.

i ran a mechanical boost gauge into my cockpit....this is UNTIL i find the permanent solution i want.

I just installed the JB3 PnP yesterday in my 135i (v81). Took me about 1.5 hours but I really took my time so I was absolutely certain everything was hooked up correctly before firing up the car. It'll probably take me 30 minutes now that I know what to do.

The car friggin SCREAMS now. Problem is you just don't stay in 1st gear for long so its hard to totally get a good read of how it feels at WOT in 1st. In 2nd you can absolutely feel it. I'd probably say third is where you can feel it the most, becasue you are in gear a bit longer and not up to too high of a speed, but you can feel it in all gears as the RPMs ramp up. I can't say for sure about adaptation time but the first WOT I did after about 3 minutes of driving got me pushed back in my seat big time and I caught up to traffic almost instantly -- much more quickly than stock.

This is really an incredible mod for the money.

agreed on all points. gears are just gears, the engine is cranking fast in all gears but 1 and 2 are gone in no time... without question, if I hammer that throttle in any gear, I'm going really fast REALLY quickly .

Can't wait to finally get my buddies with stock 335i's out for some fast driving...
