Problem with Jerky Stops - 2007 335i
I am having an issue with jerky stops in my 2007 335i. Almost every stops I come to, right before the car stops, the car jerks forward like someone tapped my rear bumper. At first, I thought this was only when the engine was cold, as I only drive very short distance back and forth to work (less than 5 miles), but it still does it even when the engine is fully warmed up. When cold, it is every stop. When warm, maybe 70% of the time.
Anyone else still having these issues? Search seems to bring back posts from 2007/2008, but not much more recent ones, so maybe the recent models do not have this issue? I am the second owner, so I am not sure if this was there before, but I have noticed this for past few months. I am assuming this is the soft stop feature. Anyway to disable this? This shows up on both D and DS mode. I think it even does it when I manually downshift coming to a stop. I took it to the dealership twice and: - the first time, they checked the transmission fluid (OK), and then reset the computer. It was good for a day, but then the jerk came back - the second time, reprogrammed the computer to the latest, and they raised the issue with BMW, and they denied PUMA case saying this is within the working parameters of the operations of the car I am not sure how this could be “normal”? If I reset the transmission learning thing (foot off the brake, push “start”, hold down the gas pedal for 60 seconds), then it will not do this for a short while, but then it will come right back within a day. I can deal with this if it happens every once in a while, but almost every stop is a bit ridicules.

I believe there was a problem with hill assist interfering with the way this works.
I believe the new software disables this feature? I forget. Search for hill assist and brake jerk or something? |

I'm 97% sure if you report this to the dealer they will update your software and the problem will go away.

SI B 24 06 06
Automatic Transmission October 2006 Technical Service This Service Information bulletin supersedes SI B24 06 06 dated August 2006. designates changes to this revision SUBJECT A Slight Bump is Felt Shortly after the Vehicle Comes to a Stop MODEL E85 3.0 and 3.0si with the GA6HP19Z transmission produced up to 07/2006 E90, E91 All with the GA6HP19Z transmission produced up to 09/2006 SITUATION A slight one-time bump is felt shortly after the vehicle comes to a stop. CAUSE This is due to the design concept of "NIC", or Neutral Idle Control. This gearbox feature uncouples the torque converter whenever the vehicle is stationary, gearbox oil temperature is between 20°C and 120°C, and the brakes are applied. By disconnecting the torque converter the load on the engine is reduced to a minimum. Please explain this feature and its operation to the customer. CORRECTION For the E85, revised EGS software is available with Progman 23.0 or higher. For the E90, E91 revised EGS software is expected in a future release of Progman. Until that time, on a customer complaint basis only, this feature can be deactivated as described in the procedure below. PROCEDURE E85 – On a customer complaint basis only, reprogram the EGS module with Progman 23.0 or higher. It is not possible to deactivate this feature using the retrofit option on the E85. E90, E91 - On a customer complaint basis only, perform the Retrofit - "Converter lockup clutch" using Progman 23.0 (Target Data status: E89x-06-09-520) or higher. Follow the "Retrofit" procedures as outlined in SI B09 05 01.

I did see that SI before, that is why I asked the dealer if my "computer" was up to date, and he said yes. But the problem still shows.
Is this a separate procedure than updating the "computers"?

Are you sure they actually did the update and were not just BSing? Updates on these cars are very complicated and can take several days. The SIB posted above is right on.

AHA! So it's NOT a loose can rolling around in the trunk, after all! Seriously, I'd heard of this NIC issue, but hadn't connected it to the thump I get pulling into the garage...thanks for describing it so clearly. Now I know what's going on.
I don't think I'm going to bother with getting it disabled. As someone pointed out, reprogramming can take a day or more, and there is always something that gets reset or missed or set wrong or...better leave it well enough alone. Thanks for the info, though! |

BTW, the SI thing posted up there seems to indicate that the bump is felt AFTER the car has stopped, but I feel it RIGHT BEFORE the stop. So I am not sure if this is the same issue or not. Sometimes the jerk is very smooth, and I have no issue taking that as a "normal" behavior, but most of the time, it feels like a decent tap on the rear bumper by another car.

I used to have the same problem, but after already coming to a stop. That one was the NIC. I don't think the NIC will give you issues while you're still coming to a stop, but I may be wrong on that one.

I can confirm the same thing happens with my car and I have a 6MT. Its not just with AT.
Mine is bone stock 2008 335i E90. The software in the car is still the original one from the factory. When I slow down to a stop, right about when the car is about to get to a full stop, it "lurches" for a second, then comes to a full stop. It feels like the brakes gave in at the last second and then they clamped on again... |

That is exactly what I get as well. How often does this happen? Mine is almost every stop. Have you approached the dealer about it?

I don't mean this in a bad way at all: is this your first BMW?
The only reason I ask is I've noticed many people had issues with the brakes being 'touchy' when going less than 5 MPH. Not trying to diminish your issue, just trying to understand the perspective.

BMW's do have "real" brakes, unlike a lot of other cars. But this problem is well known to E90 drivers. It's not his imagination.

I wasn't necessarily saying it was made up. Just trying to understand the balance between what he's seeing and what the dealership is seeing and finding. He's probably right about it. I just know sometimes it is simple things, ya know?
