Best bang for buck mod. Go buy it now.

So we were @ infineon yesterday for a track event (pictures coming)...and there was a sale at the race shop. I ended up getting an OMP standard ball type shift knob for $12!! For shits and giggles I put it on....

HOLY #@*(^&. This is the way the car should have felt from the factory. It feels great now! Feels like a short shifter compared to the OEM knob. Who would have guessed that the shifts feel like crapola because of the knob!! This in combination with an actual short shifter would be kick ass! For those of you who have a 6 spd and an OEM knob, go out and buy a new one... I recommend an aftermarket piece (around the same amount of money for the shorter OEM one anyways, just make sure the knob is smaller than the OEM). It's crazy how much that one small piece improves the overall feel of the car.

GO DO IT NOW AND THANK ME LATER.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING STILL READING THIS? GO GET ONE NOW!

So I can fill a raquet ball with sand and plop it on top of the shifter rod for less. Would that work?

Yup. Do it. Just don't let the sand leak.

I'll take pictures when I take lunch.

I got the UUC solid stainless steel ball wrapped in leather. Tremendous improvement over stock. Its shorter, fatter, and weight 4 - 5 times as much making shift smoother and faster.

to each his own. I'll probably swap this for a ARC ti knob later. This was suppose to go in my MR2, but I got bored between sessions.

anyways...just change out your knob and thank me later.

I actually had changed mine to the shorter leather sport knob and that made a nice difference. I have a Ti Cavalino knob in my M3 and that is weighted perfectly. However, with that one I learned that I dont want a metal shift knob in my daily driver. They are horribly cold in the winter and wickedly hot in the summer.

I agree, it does make a large difference. You're real excited about it! Congrats, I do suggest others do this, the stock knob is horrible.

Check out the Whalen Shift Machine on their website. It is by far the best mod for my 2005 MINI. No other shift knob even comes close.

I agree, the stock shift knob really blows. Its way too tall and it makes the gearbox feel way too rubbery. I swapped it out for an OEM M shift knob, and it has improved the feel of the gearbox ten fold. Its still not as good as my S2K was with a countersunk knob/ssk, but its much better then stock. Definitely worth the five minute install for this mod.

I have this one just as pictured. It is slower shifting because it weighs more. The rest is in your mind. You may like the "feel" but adding weight and decreasing leverage slows shifting.

I also got the boot, it comes as one piece with the boot attached to the new knob.

Just curious how this is decreasing leverage and slowing shifting?? I think this has improved my shifting speed, it moves through the gates very easy w the added weight of the stainless knob. If you cant move a 25 oz hunk of metal around quickly you really need to hit the gym.
