the dreaded serpentine belt explosion hits
So my drive belt pretty much shattered yesterday going about 40mph on sunnyside road in clackamas. I felt a "bump" then the red battery light came on and I lost power steering. Pulled over and checked and nothing visible damaged and managed to pull as much of the belt pieces out. Drove home with no power steering and praying to the gods my battery didnt give out.
Got home, jacked it up, removed under carriage cover, and removed all the belt pieces. Inspected pully's and for any leaks around crank case. No leaks, no damaged pullys (will have to remove to verify backside) My car had the drive belt replaced at kuni on 12/20/12 and they have a 2 year warranty on parts. Power steering pump replaced on 7/15/13. Any way to fight for a warranty fix on the drive belt? less then 2 years and about only 10k miles. |

if within 2 years, call them and see what they offer. if not towing for repair at least repair itself should be free.

Talked to SA over the phone. Basically he said if the belt failed due to itself then they will cover costs. But if due to something else, for example, pullys loose or tensioners loose then no coverage. They wanted to see the belt, but the belt shredded into pieces. For me to tow the car to them would be about $100 and no gaurantee they would warranty. Then i would have to tow it back home or pay them to do the work. Minimum would cost me $300. So I decided to just buy the belt $83.00 and do the work myself.

How far did you drive without the belt? Check the main seal for leaks, I know couple people on the forum lost the main seal and ended up with pieces of there belts inside there timing chains.

When the belt snapped, i pulled over and removed the belt pieces that i could. Drove home about 3 miles, jacked up car and removed underbody plastic cover and checked for leaks. No leaks at that time, checked yesterday as I was removing the radiator fan and did more clean up, still no leaks or signs of debris being sucked into timing chain.

Well got all the parts today from kuni bmw. Replaced the belt tensioner w/pulley, upper and lower deflection pulleys, and belt. Took about 1.5-2 hours and she is up and running.
Wish I would have had a second person to take pics for a DIY for N54 belt replacement. |

Anyone know what the 50k, 60k, maintenance schedule should look like on a 335i?
I just purchased one with 52k, had pre-purchase inspection done but now concerned about belts etc... |

So I just replaced all my pulleys, tensioner, and belt myself. I now try to inspect my belts as often as I can for any signs of damage. |

I check mine every single time I pop the hood and even sometimes check it right after pushing harder than normal. To many horror stories about pieces getting stuck in the timing chain.
