Xbox 360 or Ps3
Bad news, well not end of the world or likely to end middle east conflicts or anything but the ps3 has finally reared it's ugly head and gone YLOD. Which according to the Internet more or less means dead.
I'm on the lookout for new console but don't know if I should take the plunge and go for the xbox as I've been a Ps fanboy since Ps one! Opinions greatly welcome as I recall there's many gamers on here.BTW my gaming at moment is quite limited to footy (PES)car racing and CoD Thanks in advance |

Xbox all the way, buddy.
My PS3 has sat unused since the day I got my xbox.

I went the other way. Sold my xbox about a month after getting a ps3. Xbox seems to attract a younger audience so the online can be like playing in a nursery, particularly in CoD.

Doesn't the PS3s media player capabilities swing it? I don't game but the PS3 I got from CPW a few years ago is used a lot to stream movies, play Blu-ray, iPlayer etc.

The xbox is by far a better gaming machine. It's online offering is not just better, its absolutely years ahead for stability, content, speed and security.
The ps3 IS the better media server, but if you 'obtain' files from the net, it will require you to check them via the internet which I don't like. Xbox doesn't and either device will stream from a network media server or directly from usb hdd. There are other things, like despite blu ray being part of the ps3 offering, its 'best' sound output is optical which only supports 5.1, so you lose some of the 'point' of owning movies on brd. I own both and to be honest, your looking at 150 quid brand new for either so its not a bad prospect. If I had to hang my hat on one or the other, I'd go with xbox 500% without a doubt. Don't worry about ps4 or xbox 720. Either is 3 years away minimum and VERY conceptual right now. Wii 2 is a bit closer, but a very different kind of device. Matt |

What is YLOD?
On the way in to work this morning I saw a poster for PS3 at £199. That's a pretty good price I reckon - I don't play games on mine, just use it for Bluray, music and pics.

I'm lucky enough to own both and think they both have their strong points. The PS3 is 1080p and the Xbox 720, which on a big TV can make a lot of difference. Also some games are only available on certain machines. I bought my second Xbox just because of Forza Motorsport.

PS3 price cuts last week means I got another cause my old 80GB is now full up.
Ignored the XBOX on principle cause MS basically picked the easy choice and went down the console route instead of promising the Games for Windows revolution that us faithful PC gamers were waiting for during the late 90s/early 00s. PC Gaming is just about there but nothing like it was back then so stuff the Xbox. Don't play online that much and don't like CoD, played Gears of War, Halo and Fable on the PC, big deal. So I got a PS3 3 years ago and now finally imho it is coming good. Developers are finally supporting it properly, Valve with their Portal 2 release for example. Exclusives are coming thick and fast and we still have Uncharted 3 to look forward too. Gran Turismo 5 is very much a love/hate game at the mo but DLC has been promised so that should come good in the long term with regards to new content and hopefully more tracks and Premium standard cars. Not got an AV receiver as I don't honestly feel the need for Cinema level sound in my living room so the Blu Ray DVD playback and DVD upscaling (same as Denon btw) are more than adequate for me. Stick with PS3. |

Surely the xbox works out more expensive once you buy all the extras and sign up for the online? I would also imagine the better sound output of the xbox is cancelled out by the sound of the fan which is a bit like having a 747 idling in your living room.

PS3 YLOD - it is possible to fix it.
I had a 60GB with the YLOD, rang Sony, think it was £130 for a console swap, straight replacement. However a friends had died at th same time I'd read about fixing it and so had he so we set about it..... Its a method of refluxing, replacing the worn CPU compound and bending the clamps. In no way shape or form would I believe this would have worked but it did, so if you fancy a go it worth it, whats to lose? |

Yeah it does work out more expensive, but need I remind you that you get what you pay for? It never comes as a surprise to me to see how consoles instill such loyalty, but I've never understood why people really care about the PS3. It's like we all (me included) had so much fun with the PSOne and 2 that 'poor little Sony' need us all to defend them. IMHO, the PS3 is a good bit of kit, but its exclusives list is tiny and only the likes of Uncharted and GT really matter. The reality is that sadly, the PS3 took far too long to 'get going' and even though 'more developers support it' its far too late to firm up what is, in reality, a substandard offering. Check Eurogamers weekly benchmark tests between xbox and PS3 games. I don't think the PS3 has EVER scored higher, with some games like Bayonetta actually being so bad that the PS3 version scores lower in reviews. You wanna play games? REALLY? Then buy an xbox. Do you wanna tell people you own a console which is hip and indy, featuring 1080p and modest blu ray capability, but games not really your thing? Buy a PS3 then - I'm ok with it. The 16 other people online will love you for it too!! Oh but only 3 can tell you so because the rest Sony have bought a Bluetooth headset or paired it yet.... Matt |

Trying to be too much of a 'troll poster' here mate, but your Pixel Junkies sig did make me think at one point that your were a PS3 fanboi, why? Cause of the superb PixelJunk series of games you can download on PSN! Anyhows the 360 and PS3 are both great consoles each with strengths and weakness. Do disagree though that the PS3 exclusives list is no longer short and has grown massively this year, think we have nearly had an exclusive game release every month or so, see this list for example: Jan: Little Big Planet 2 Feb: Killzone 3 Mar: Motorstorm Apocolypse Apr: SOCOM 4 Jun: Infamous 2 next month is Resistance 3 and in November we have Uncharted 3. My own fave though is future PSN offering 'Journey' this looks truly like a peice of art and reminds me of games like Geoff Grammnond's The Sentinel from my BBC days. Shame MS released the XBOX though all those £1000+ PC rigs with nothing to push their state of the art tech on except their Windows OS. Hey ho hoorah for the XBOX then....... |

Hmmm...
Don't agree mate sorry. Lets review... LBP2 - Great, but REALLY not much more than LBP1+ a lot of user made content and some tweaks. I love it, but it didn't change the game AT ALL, hence why it bombed sales wise. Killzone 3 - Nothing wrong with it, but it lost all the grittiness of the second outing and went 'COD' on us. For 3 hours I had fun, then I forgot it existed. Motorstorm Apocalypse - I'm sure MS weren't exactly quaking in their boots! SOCOM4 - Really? Infamous 2 - Just lol. Bog standard third person action game, done well I grant you. All consoles have exclusives, but they have to matter. Uncharted is the PS3's Zelda - it is amazing, iconic, groundbreaking. The rest of your list are just forgettable also-rans mate, sorry. Matt |
