Returning to the OP question...

I am using Mobil 1 ESP formula.

It is a LL04 oil but its cleaning properties for catalytic converters are much better than those of regular LL01 oils.

Again, not to overanalyze, but I saw blah blah blah TBNs, and then BMW state not to use LL04 in gas motors outside of Europe, and it's simply enough for me to use LL01. It's like telling a kid not to put his hand on the stove, often, he will.

I have one left made in Germany, but received two made in Mexico. No thanks. I ordered some Mahle and Hengst instead.

Are they just as good when not made in Europe? Maybe. But the cost cutting savings, was not passed onto the consumer.

My oil temp dropped 10*F when I changed the oil to Amsoil 0w40, now it runs at 240*F instead of 250*F.

I think the correct choice depends on where you live and what sort of fuel you use.

Petrol models in europe LL01 or LL04 (mostly used LL04)
Diesel models in Europe LL04
Petrol models in USA only LL01 (due to bad petrol quality)
Diesel models in USA LL04

This looks to be correct. Makes me wonder how you know what non-BMW oil to use in a new M, because it uses 0w40 LL-01. However, with BMW-branded oil, it has a M in the product name. Before, the 10w60 gave it away.

edit: I was kinda surprised to learn that the BMW 320i from 2014 on has its own 0w20 LL-14 oil. What happens if you use LL-01, it blows up? lol

Well... Castrol 0w-40 is becoming hard to find in my area ever since Mobil 0w-40 lost BMW's LL-01 approval.

High efficiency oil is my guess. Entry level focused on mpgs, makes sense. I wouldn't personally using something as thin as a 20wt for extended OCIs, but I'm sure it would still survive...

Welcome back, thread! My last purchase was Mobil 1 Euro 0w40 with the LL-01 designation (Walmart had 5 or 6 5qt jugs with LL-01--last visit they had 0 of any Euro). Got a $12 rebate on two of three 5 qt. and I bought 3.
