BMW to Battle Audi and Mercedes Advertising in Superbowl

BMW has purchased two 30-second spots in this year's Superbowl, which will be played on February 6th. This represents the first time that BMW will be advertising during the Super Bowl in a decade. It comes as no coincidence then that Mercedes and Audi have also purchased commercial time for the most-watched American television broadcast (last year's game was watched by approximately 106 million people, making it the most popular American TV program ever, according to TV audience rater Nielsen), according to Autonews. This marks the first time that all three German luxury brands are advertising at the biggest U.S. television event.

BMW's last commercial was 10 years ago in 2000. The ads were two 30-second spots for the then new BMW X5, estimated to cost $2.1M for those 30 seconds, or $70,000 per second (compared to last year's game, where advertisers paid $3 million for a 30-second slot, according to The Nielsen Co.) These figures sounds like a lot, but many companies still line up to buy up the ad spots since the Superbowl is watched as much for the commercials as the actual game.

COMMERCIALS TO EXPECT:

• BMW began a Facebook contest on January 21st in connection with its Super Bowl commercial which will feature the all new 2011 X3. The contest, dubbed "The X3 Matchup," will give viewers the opportunity to guess the configuration of the BMW X3 featured in the advertisement for a chance to win a Grand Prize two-year lease on the vehicle and a trip to the Spartanburg factory. • Mercedes' ads will focus on new sporty models - its SLS roadster supercar, new C-Class coupe, facelifted CLS, and the new SLK roadster.
  
  
• Audi's superbowl ad already started airing on January 13 and continues its recent commercials' theme of directly snubbing the competition. In the 60-second spot, the lights of a Mercedes S-class turn off as the narrator says, "Goodnight old luxury." The ad then promotes Audi's A8 flagship as the face of "new" luxury.

AUDI is always trying to put down other brands (aka BMW & Mercedes) in its advertising attempts.

Its such a failure...it shows they have a lot to prove.

Audi's smear campaign is absurd. Their latest ad comparing the Audi to a 3 series bimmer and a c class benz is a perfect example.

I just dont understand how associating a balla life style with the car brand. Classic is timeless.


Audi is the insecure ripped guy at the gym. The one with the small penis and a jack up pickup that has something to prove.

Well said! BMW has nothing to prove, they're "in first place" for the time being and there are reasons for that. People know that, that's why the 3er is a massive seller in the us yet there are almost no commercials (in my area anyways) advertising it.

Audi is acting like an ignored child in their commercials. But they do have a good product.

Infiniti is by far the worst luxury brand, but I'm the vain guy who would never buy a car from japan. Lexus and Infiniti just don't turn me on, they have alot of space to cover before they can occupy bmw's spot. MB and Audi are good competition and make good products, just not BMWs.

Well most of the people that will be watching probably wont know the ad wars so they just wont bother to think of audi the way we think so it will look good, mercedes will have great mouth watering add`s with their top notch cars. And bmw with the X3. A bit moderate dont you think
