What are the chances I blow up my charge pipe?

I’m looking for some educated opinions here. So far I’ve got an injen intake and that’s it. I’ve got an eBay intercooler in the box ready for install after my car visits the dealer next week. After that I’m planning of going to Mhd stage 1 or 1+...and that’s probably it for the foreseeable future.

So...what do y’all think the chances are that I blow up my charge pipe? I got a good deal on a really nice looking Cobb charge pipe on eBay...but then I realized that my lower CP will still be plastic as the intercooler I bought uses the stock connections. So for now I’m thinking I’ll just leave that pipe in the box...

Can anyone share some oem charge pipe longevity experiences?

Depends on year and mileage. Initially the 07-08 charge pipes were thought to last longer than the redesigned ones on the later models. If you have the later model cp then I'll bet money it will blow sooner rather than later even on stock boost. If you have an older model it depends on mileage, but I wouldn't risk it cause those cars are now older anyways (which is why I upgraded proactively on my 07).

It's cheap insurance so why wouldn't you get one?

I have a Cobb upper cp in a box...the intercooler I’ve got uses the oem connections and I was looking at the lower cp the other day and it appears to be made from the same stuff as the upper...so it seems like there’s not a lot of benefit to changing the upper if I leave the lower oem.

chances are pretty good. charge pipes are cheap, just get one and save yourself the headache.

depends on the intercooler you purchased. some use the factory connections and some require an upgrade that normally comes with the intercooler or at least an option to purchase. if yours has the smaller oem style connection they are typically fine. just not as efficient.

Only one way to really know or find out.

I can tell you this, along with 100's of my customers, they CP's tend to break at the worst time!

There's at least 1 guy a week asking me to overnight a charge pipe cause it blew and they need to get back on the road.

There's no "what if" for the chargepipe, it's more like when will it blow off, because it will for everyone. Luckily for me, it was when I was taking a girl out on the first date after picking her up

It's such a cheap and easy mod there's not much point in risking it.

Same. The stock chargepipe is still holding on fine with a Stage 1 MHD tune on my 72k mile '11 Z4. It's lasted through 2 years of the tune and a few track days so it's definitely put up with some extended boost.

BMW created this feature where all their plastics turn into paper over time.

I like the Cobb Charge pipe. Fitment is spot on & it's under $200.00. No added fees for this and that. Cobb is a proven maker of after mkt parts for this platform.

The only extra thing I would buy would be a new OEM gasket for the charge pipe where it seals to the throttle body. Your old C-clip should work no problem. Mine did.

08 335i with 79k miles on mhd stage 1+ a little over 3 years now and still on original charge pipe. I know several pre 2010 335i owners and none of them have had their charge pipes break. The only ones that i've seen or heard break are the ones where BMW changed to the one piece designs that didn't have the flexible portion like the older ones.
