So I try to park away from other cars but sometimes, you just can't avoid it.

Today I just noticed I got a scratched ding on the driver side and it went through the paint!

How much do you guys think this would cost to fix? Would the whole door need to be painted?

Dude, that is a pretty small chip! Just get some touchup paint (drcolorchip.com is great!) and fix that yourself. You will always need it and its not worth repainting your entire door for one mark.

If it makes you feel any better I just found a huge dent in my hood from something after work today

Ouch, always sucks when its on a body line like that.

I had one like that put on my passenger side like a month after I bought the car. Didn't bother doing full repair on it. I cleaned, and painted it.

Yes its small but its just so frustrating, the problem with touch up paint is that you will see its there. Its an eyesore, of course nothing beats if its done professionally but, then again it may not be worth to do the whole door. I assume it can be professionally touch-up?

Oh and the bottom part of the door has a gash, not a big deal that can be buffed out easy.

take some rubbing compound and polish to it. It'll be much less noticeable in direct sight.

But otherwise yes.

I know what you mean, I just recently had a similar problem (self-inflicted though lol) and had it fixed up by Rich at Luxury Auto Body in Etobicoke, dont make the mistake I did and try to fix it yourself lol :P. Lucky for you the damage is in the middle of the door so they can blend the door color outward, and not have to blend the whole quater panel. Give Rich a call and see what he can do for you

Thanks, but I think I'd rather it be "self-inflicted" than someone else lol. For now I will just try rubbing compund and touch it up to prevent it from rusting. Then figure out what I will do later, maybe after getting my car detailed it will be "better"

If anything, talk to Rich at Luxury Auto body, and ask about what your best options are. Hes an amazing guy and wont tell you "oh your only solution is to paint the whole door" lol. He will be honest with you and if you dont want to paint the whole door I'm sure he would use his touch up paint and put some protection on it for you, FREE of charge. Tell him Harpreet sent you

A chip like that, touch up paint is your best bet. OEM paint + wet sand + polish. Take your time and it'll be virtually undetectable to anybody but you.

Trying to do a spot/blend repair on that colour may not look great, and a door respray will require the entire side of the car to be blended; certainly not worth it for a chip like that.

I hate other people; cars don't stay nice around here long & people have a total disrespect for other people's property. My biz partner just got a nice 997 turbo, which was immaculate .. he already got a nasty door ding from somebody who deliberately parked close to him in an virtually empty lot.

I've actually been dinged whilst sat in my car; I was furious but on that occasion, no damage was caused - just paint transfer from his door. I think that guy will be more careful in the future

Best way to fix it without painting the whole door is to layer up touch up paint. After the touch up paint is above the rest of the surfaces you need to wet sand the area to level it off. Generally you would do 1000 Grit, followed up with 1500 Grit, and then 2000 Grit.

*You may be able to simply get away with 2000 grit if the touch up paint did not go on too heavy*

Once the area is smooth you would need buffer and rubbing compound to clean up the area.

Then follow that up with a medium polish, then a light polish.

Followed up with a wax/sealant.

IF you need more specific details I can help. However, if this is already over your head you may want to seek out a professional Paint correction detailer.

If they don't know how to fix it then you dont want them working on your car.

Note:
The area of your chip is on a body line so you need to pay special attention to keeping that body line while doing the work. You are probably in one of the worst spots when it comes to chip repair, wet sanding, paint correction.

You may be better of with light coats of touch up paint and deal with the minor imperfection associated with it.

Please, if you don't have experience with paint and clearcoat and polishing, don't try rubbing compound. That's like 800 grit paper depending on how you use it. It's more complicated than that, and you'll want to research and have more stuff to work with.
Just start with a small amount of touch-up, and see how it looks before getting serious ;-)

I did have some experience with rubbing compound. I did this with my old car worked, wetsand it with 1500 grit, it came out better. But I don't think I trust myself with this job, esp this is not a flat surface.

For now I just touch it up, just to cover it.

I had a small rock chip on my hood, and he fixed it up with touchup paint and clearcoat that I brought. Can't see it unless I look really hard.
