Is this a good deal?

Its a automatic e36 sedan with 170,000 miles. sports and premium package. How low should the price be for it to be a good deal? Are these transmissions known for failure and does anyone have any experience with these e36s?

Thanks!

Am I the only one that cringes and has to stop and re-read something when people use the wrong word for "brakes" like in the CL ad:

"Recent work performed is breaks, front suspension with control arms, tie rods and strut towers"

I see this all the time

Brings all us wrenchers down a full socket size

I'm a sucker for these, it looks great, price is tempting, but a PPI is a must

honestly, this is your decision. Do you want an automatic? Are YOU OK with $170K miles. CL ad looks like a clean car, but YOU have to do the due diligence and decide if it's mechanically sound

I had a 328i as my first stick car. They're tight as a drum compared to a lot of similar cars from that era. I remember the GM auto transmissions did have failures, but without regular maintenance anything will fail over a long enough timeline.

If I were buying something like this, no matter how insistent the seller is that all of the "breaks" were done and that it was owned by an enthusiast (read: they REALLY like their BMW, doesn't actually mean anything) you have to be prepared to dump at least $1000 into it to square away any gremlins that you will inevitably find after purchase.

They're fantastic cars when maintained. To think that it would need absolutely nothing and be for sale sub $2k is being quite optimistic.

Pics always make the car look better, especially when youre looking to buy.
