Anyone else going? Nomile, are you going? I see one 328xi on the attendee list.

Bone-stock M42-power... 137 sweet horses that are 17 years old. But good suspension, tires and brakes. Signed up for B. Haven't heard back about placement yet. Definitely stop by - would be good to put some faces with the handles.

Hey everyone, just FYI, if you have some time Saturday the 22nd, the RMCBMWCCA is in desperate need of some volunteers for corner work. I have done this before at HPR, and it was actually a pretty good time, especially if you work them with a buddy. I am driving though, so can't this time

Quote:
Gruppe,

It's less than 3 weeks until the club has some fun
in the sun in Pueblo at our Sept 22nd driving school. We are way short of corner-worker volunteers so this is a plea to come help and have some fun!

It takes a lot of volunteers to staff the corners so we
can run a safe and fun event. One day schools are harder to staff because we don't get the usual drivers volunteering for the day they don't drive.

No experience is
necessary to work corners. We have pre-reading material, do training at
the track prior to going out to the corners, and I'm usually able to
pair newbies up with more experienced people or with people they
request. Volunteers will not have to respond to accidents - they are rare,
and we have a safety truck and ambulance for that. Those who volunteer
early get their choice of corners, and I've already had a few people
volunteer unsolicited (thanks to those who have already signed up via motorsportreg. com). We provide lunch and for people who drive out just to volunteer we can help with a gas allowance.

I'd appreciate hearing from anybody who is interested in volunteering
as soon as possible. I don't mind them changing their mind prior to the
event as long as I'm told beforehand, so encourage volunteers today!
Volunteers can sign up through the motorsportreg. com signup process or
just fire me an email and I'll get them signed up. I'm going to be in Europe for work for the week prior to the event so I would appreciate hearing from volunteers sooner than later!

cheers,
Bruce Leggett

Seconded

I wanted to mirror Racey's remarks - I worked corners for the first time at HPR last spring, and I learned as much about track-driving watching as I did on the track. It's a great experience, and you rack up serious car-ma points. Would recommend anyone interested in tracking to do this. I know that Alex is signed up, and hats off to him.

I'll go over to 318ti.org and post same thing now...

I'm going to be all alone at those corners. I'll have to layer sun screen on.

I'm considering doing the open lapping day at the track the day before - Friday.

That's a great idea - May have to see how work is going that week, and maybe do the same... Season's closing down.

Thanks for corner-working Alex. I think you'll enjoy it as well.

So I need new pads and rotors, here are my thoughts

Front: Z4is Rotors, Ferodo DS2500 pads

Rear: Zimmerman Z-coat rotors & Stoptech Performance pads

Stoptech SS brake lines at all 4 corners

This sound like a decent setup for street and occasional track, or should I step up to a slotted/drilled rear or front rotor instead?

^ Sounds like a good setup to me. Are the rear pads a bit softer? If so, I think that is good idea. I have been using Pagid Yellows all around but am considering Orange in the back to bring up the heat in the rear (yes, you heard me correctly, I think the rears are running too cool, my rotors are wearing faster - and the pads less - in my rear brakes and it's not DSC, I drive DSC off 24/7/365 snow/rain/shine/track/street)... What brake pads were you using previously? What tires are you running?

http://www.stoptech.com/technical-su...l-white-papers

http://www.stoptech.com/technical-su...alance-matters

http://www.stoptech.com/technical-su...brake-upgrades

... and one of my favorites:
http://www.stoptech.com/technical-su...nd-other-myths

Quote:
Friction is the mechanism that converts dynamic energy into heat. Just as there are two sorts of friction between the tire and the road surface (mechanical gripping of road surface irregularities by the elastic tire compound and transient molecular adhesion between the rubber and the road in which rubber is transferred to the road surface), so there are two very different sorts of braking friction - abrasive friction and adherent friction. Abrasive friction involves the breaking of the crystalline bonds of both the pad material and the cast iron of the disc. The breaking of these bonds generates the heat of friction. In abrasive friction, the bonds between crystals of the pad material (and, to a lesser extent, the disc material) are permanently broken. The harder material wears the softer away (hopefully the disc wears the pad). Pads that function primarily by abrasion have a high wear rate and tend to fade at high temperatures. When these pads reach their effective temperature limit, they will transfer pad material onto the disc face in a random and uneven pattern. It is this "pick up" on the disc face that both causes the thickness variation measured by the technicians and the roughness or vibration under the brakes reported by the drivers.

With adherent friction, some of the pad material diffuses across the interface between the pad and the disc and forms a very thin, uniform layer of pad material on the surface of the disc. As the friction surfaces of both disc and pad then comprise basically the same material, material can now cross the interface in both directions and the bonds break and reform. In fact, with adherent friction between pad and disc, the bonds between pad material and the deposits on the disc are transient in nature - they are continually being broken and some of them are continually reforming.

Yes, rear pads are just a slight bit softer...that and they don't offer Ferodo pads for the rear on our car.

If you can believe it, I still had original pads and rotors from the factory on mine until now (40k miles). I am actually really surprised they lasted that long.

I will be running the stock Bridgestone RFT's, same as last couple times. They have been fine for me the last couple times. Are you running OEM rotors Alex?

Oh and thanks for the links, good stuff there!

Not that applicable, but I run carbotech XP8 on the 318ti, and they are phenomenal. The dust and squeal, however, are out of this world... But the stopping power is phenomenal. Might have to try the StopTech on the next round - heard good things.

So FedEx lost my front pads and rear rotors....guess I may be going OEM from the dealer since I don't think I will get any others in time...and HPA is backordered on the Ferodos.

Racey, this is late in the game, but I hear NAPA also has decent rotors. Heard that from an SCCAer. I used those on my E90 and they are holding up well.

Anyone need a ride to Pueblo or want to caravan? I am meeting someone else at the Park Meadows Great Indoors parking lot if so...probably around 5am.

No worries - we'll meet sometime. Which class were you in?
Here's a vid I took during the second session. Wish the camera had worked during the later ones.

Was in A class. Nice vid! I borrowed Forza's (Matt) go pro but I was a bonehead and never got it working right. I had figured it out by the 4th session, but I couldn't run then.

BTW, you passed my car in the pits (on the left) at 3:50 in your vid.
