these are the black grills from the 328i...with the only modification being the plastic piece on the right side is removed so that it doesn't block flow to the oiler cooler.

I don't know what to tell you. I know exactly what they are, I have them.

I got the passenger side lower black grill from UED and they are indeed painted black. I have the middle and driver's side from BMW (328i ones). People have seen them and will say the UED ones are painted and not black plastic. The texture is way different than the 328i ones.

that's interesting. i'm not doubting you at all....but i swear they are all black plastic. i'll double check tomorrow by scraping the inside and see if paint comes off. the thing is if i remember correctly...the part number which was on the inside of the grill was scratched out by UED...and it was indeed black underneath. but i'll have to double check anyway just out of pure curiousity from what you're saying.
i'll report back...

Depends on how hot it is outside. Couple hours should be fine.

been getting some pm's on my DIY.....so ill answer few of the questions on the open forum:
1) the brand of paint that i bought was not a preference...you can buy any paint that is made for plastic. This particular brand (Rust-oleum) is awesome because they make a wide range of types of paint which i have used in the past ie: BBQ paint.....metal....rust etc. I have also painted my lower grills on my Carrara 4S and it hasnt chipped yet too. (see pic in my original post)
2) I have had NO experiences with chipping...I did this 7 months ago...and do a shit load of highway driving....it still looks perfect.
3) the job took about an hour....sure you can buy black mesh....but your looking at alot of workk pulling off your bumper....just too much work for me....im a lazy ass!
4) PREP work is critical.....take your time with the masking!!!!

cheers, shiggy

Use wax, I got a bunch of drips on my bumper and it came right off with a Q-Tip and some Collinite.

BTW; my mesh is holding off pretty well. I used Rustoelum Flat Black Universal spray paint...only a couple of chips after a couple hundred miles. I only put one coat on because I was exhausted after only the first.

But if the car is a lease, won't the dealer charge you for painting it..?
