totally sold on M£ over the 335i

finally got a triple result today

1. the mrs can keep her 57 plate corsa as a run about to work
2. admiral multi car to add a m3 was £512 for remainder of the year

3.now i always loved the m3 e92 just bever had a good enough test drive in one, today i have a good 45 min in on and got to say since this will now be a weekend toy (work van in week) i have decided to ake the plunge and get a m3

i have had to take a small loan of 7k to able to afford it but i have no other debts apart from mortgage and bills so i though sod it, buy it enjoy it for a while - just got to wait for bloody paperwork though! maybe put it on credit card then pay it off lol

looking at cars up to 21k with 60k on the clock so bottom of the price scale with higher mileage but if only doing about 4k a year in it it should be ok

as much as i loved my 335i the M just feels special and i do enjoy my track days with opentrack

Just stick £1200 of suspension upgrade and performance brake kit on the 335?

not quite 21k lol maybe the thought of getting into debt scares me off and im very indecisive at the best of times ha ha

suspension upgrades on a 335 would be nice however with the track days the m would be a better set up and more fun at the weekends

E46 M3 CS is a great tool - sounds fantastic and handles beautifully (and you don't have to have the stupid SMG II box that the CSL is lumbered with).

Still means that while you're exiting the track backwards, the M3 in front is in a lovely controlled drift.

The M3 just does on and over limit so much better than 335i, which gets really snappy just when the M3 is getting interesting.

Think a lot of that is down to the driver but, agree in principal.

Potentially a bit of a silly question here, but would an M3 LSD fit into an E92 335D? What would the results be?

£2k is a very high price for the quaife, and that's after they take your old diff

When Birds fitted my LSD they offered to give back my old diff but I told them to keep it because in reality what am I going to do with a diff??

Even at £2k I would say the Quaife is good value, remember the 335i is a £35K+ car new, and people will happily spend £2k on options like Satnav ...

I would take a E9X M3 over a stock 335i, but a well modded 335 (tune/LSD/suspension/brakes) is not much slower on public roads, and have much cheaper running costs....But it makes more financial sense to just buy a E9X M3 since most of the money spent modding a 335 will not be recouped come resale time

If you have a option to buy a E9x M3 over a 335 go for it, but I didn't have that choice so had to make do with buying a 335 and than modding it to bring it closer to a E9X M3...still not exactly a bad option

It can be done, but you will need a custom propshaft made - with a 335i gearbox flange and an M3 prop shortened. You also need the m3 side shafts too.

Or do what Idnan's done, and I'm about to finish, buy a whole M3 rear sub frame from eBay from a dct M3, make the custom prop, and run the whole rear end. You will need adjustable aftermarket m3 rear toe arms if you're swapping the original 335i hubs and brakes back on.

Not really viable in the 335d I'm afraid without major compromise..

The six gear ratios in the automatic are the same for both 335i and 335d, but the 335i's rear differential is 3.46:1 versus the 335d's taller 2.81:1.

The quaife would be the much better option unless you want too short gearing.

Thanks for the info. Its just i saw an M3 diff on PH but from what you're all saying its still quite a bit of a job

I was hoping there would be a cheaper way to fit an LSD but i guess the quaife is the simplest option.

The dtc M3 diff ratio is 3.15, so a bit away from the 335d but might be better... But I'd need to calculate what the cruising speed revs would be.

I presume thats an E46 M3?

If so make sure you buy a decent one around 10k plus mark.

Oil service £170
Inspection 1 £699
Inspection 2 £899
In between service oil changes ( do yourself Circa £80)

Fuel is V power only really so factor that in circa 200-250ish miles a tank.

Insurance. hmm Tricky Usually around 500 to 1500 pounds with an excess of roughly 800 give or take a couple of hundred.

Make sure you buy a minimum 04 plate unless it has had the frame done under good will.

To be honest it is not cheap and the running costs are high this is the number one reason why you see poorly maintained M's and ones with many owners as they get shocked after they see the bills.

You would be better off modding the 335 with M bushes and arms all round. A Quaife diff and set of 1k2's

But even then the truth of it is, thats around 5k inc labour not even started on performance mods.

With 5k in an E46.... it would destroy the 335 when you introduce some bends.

Anyways bud, if you are serious and have other questions or anything PM.

P.s its a solid engine mines a daily driver circa 20k per annum.

I think what also makes the car is the Airbox.
