What is a Vanos Solenoid for?

Car back to dealers today, diagnosed that is needs a new Vanos Solenoid. What is it and what does it do? Thanks in advance.

I would imagine it is responsible for actuating a valve that opens and allows pressurized oil to flow into the VANOS unit.

Be sure to use a new O-ring on the VANOS solenoid when the replacement is installed.

Well just collected it from dealer, and certainly runnig smoother, if only in my head. As for an O-ring, too late to check, so gfingers crossed
