What is a Vanos Solenoid for?

Car back to dealers today, diagnosed that is needs a new Vanos Solenoid. What is it and what does it do? Thanks in advance.

I would imagine it is responsible for actuating a valve that opens and allows pressurized oil to flow into the VANOS unit.

Be sure to use a new O-ring on the VANOS solenoid when the replacement is installed.

Well just collected it from dealer, and certainly runnig smoother, if only in my head. As for an O-ring, too late to check, so gfingers crossed

Thank foook indeed, still chilled about it though...AUC warranty is your man. will be extending later this year for sure.

Which is all good and well for someone who wants to have a standard car.

I want one (335i) and want a tune on it. All your probs are putting me off.
