180hp 320i f30 for the US?

It seems that the German car brands are attempting to move down market with there US offerings, Mercedes with the CLA, and BMW now with the 320i. Not to say that the CLA or 320i are, or will be bad cars, but why must this be done. Obviously these models will be lower priced (the 320i at 32,500 and the CLA near 30,000) which gives the brands exposure to a different price segment. At the ~ $30,000 mark, the new Acura ILX and ATS base are going to be competition. Do you think its a wise choice of German brands to try to compete in this segment of the US market, or could it hurt what exclusivity they have left?

Option one of these 320's out and you get a price tag of ~46K. The entry is low but to get a real car with features you pay. Skip the 320 and go directly to 328.
