Power steering leak through cap

Just got my 2007 335i back from the shop getting repaired after I was rear ended and noticed a weird burning rubber/plastic smell. Opened the hood to find an overflow/leak through the power steering cap. Is this the reason for the smell? Has anyone had similar experience?

I have a similar issue as well, opened the cap and still plenty in there. I have just left it alone until my steering starts to deteriorate.

It might look like there's no Oring on yours because it's compressed. It's there, use a pick to get it off.

Even with a new o-ring you will still have a leak there. It's designed to vent, hence the hole on the cap.

There are solutions to it, but you gotta do a search.

I replaced the oring, and it solved that issue for me. Some of the best $4 I ever spent

You can get one on Amazon for a few dollars. The first one I found is Sachs brand and is $6.82. There might be cheaper ones. Don't worry about finding one for your specific model or even the E90...BMW has been using the same reservoir for years, they should all be the same.

You can also use a generic one...I think the actual size is 42mm and 2mm thickness. That's approximately a #129 or #130 SAE o-ring. I got a pack of #129s at CarQuest but it wasn't exactly the right size. It fit and didn't leak, but it didn't feel right compared to the actual one. In the future I would just spend the extra couple dollars to get the correct one.

FCP Euro:

$2.79 for ZF brand (OE)
https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...et-32411128333

$5.47 for Genuine BMW
https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...al-32411128333

Just buy it when you order other stuff. ECS Tuning and others probably have similar pricing.
