Diy Tie-Rods (inner & Outer) (Meyle HD) from Harold@HPAutowerks
Meyle Hd Tie-Rods can be ordered here:
Update: meyle HD tie-rods are terrible, blew out in 6 months! http://hpashop.com/BMW-E8X-E9X-Z4-HD...Rod-E8x-9x.htm Note: Not responsible for any damage to you or your car, this worked on my car so will work on yours. ***This tutorial assumes you know how to get your car secured on jack stands, if in doubt do NOT attempt this DIY! Tools Need not in pic (2 jacks if possible, (1) for a safety catch in case jack stand fail (I saw this happen and will NEVER forget it)....safety 1st). The 2nd jack is for jacking up suspension up to ride height. Torque specs: Tie-rod to knuckle 122 ftlb (165 Nm) Inner Tie-rod to steering rack 100 ftlb (135.6 Nm) Suggestions: Alignment is 100% neccessary, no ifs about it! your car will ride like a POS afterwards. I suggest coating all bolts with bolt penatrating formula, applying anti-seize to all bolts Step 1: Step 2 : Step 3 : Step 4 : Step 5 : Step 6 : Comparison of OEM Vs Meyle: Step 7 : Step 8 : Step 9 : Step 10 : Step 11 : Step 12 : Installed!! Impressions: Noticed a improvment right off the bat, steering is much more crisp, no more vibrations and you feel a lot more in control...for $154.00 this is a no brainer.

Great DIY! Quick question though. I'm planning on doing this and the upper and lower control arms in one fell swoop. Do I need to have the suspension jacked to ride height for this as well? Or would a good plan be do the control arms completely, then let the suspension hang and do this?
Thanks again, this really is incredibly helpful.

inner tie rod nut / crowsfoot size?
Hello,
What is the inner tie rod crows foot nut size? I know you used an adjustable wrench, but I want to buy the right size crows foot. Would appreciate the info if you have it. Thanks |

Just got the new tie-rod in the mail and measured the inner nut size and it's just over 37mm. So I guess you want a 38mm or a 1.5" crows foot.
If you want to buy a crows foot this big, you will have to order it. I checked Harbor Freight and Sears and both don't carry anything bigger than 1" in their retail stores. |

Great DIY, thanks for taking the time to post.
Quick question. When loosening/tightening the inner nut, do you have to use another wrench to apply opposite force or is the inner rack supported enough to take the 100 ft lbs of torque. Doing this next weekend and I'd rather not find out the hard way ;-)

Thanks for the quick reply. Can't use an impact on the inner though
I'm referring to step 6 right photo. The inner nut that's under the boot. BTW, my tie rods came in today and they are two different colors.... Should I be worried? One is nickel and the other is black... Yours were the same, right?
