i'm new to hdr and i can't figure out why some shots have a lot of noise and others are just fine. can someone tell me what it is? is it the f/stop? i did a few with f/stop 8 and then i wanted to have it look more crisp so i tried using f/stop 18-20. does the higher f/stop lead to more grain? i use iso 200 and set the aperature to get ev 0,-1,+1 usually.

Not sure what to tell you as far as why you have noise in your HDR shots. But Noiseninja is probably the most popular noise reduction program. You can use it as a stand a lone or plug in.

well here are some of the examples of shots i've done w/ lots of noise or grainy texture.

f/9.0, iso 800


f/20.0, iso 200


the next two are much cleaner (the red one is kinda diff bc its a diff lighting source and has much better lighting than the other night shots)

f/8.0, iso 200

You are getting noise because you are OD'ing with the HDR effect.... lessen it up a bit and the noise will go away. HDR isnt intended to create these surreal images. HDR can work wonders if you use it properly!

I love HDR, but I hate it when it's overused. Glowy edges = fail.

hmm i see... i'll have to mess around with photomatix some more then. btw what would you suggest about making the surreal images? i really like the surreal look. so if hdr isn't intended for this what would be better suited for it. and thank you for the info. i appreciate the suggestions.

sorry for killing the hdr. i'll work on it. but as a general rule of thumb.... glowy edges= bad hdr? i'm trying to make the cars have more of that shine and pop so i was thinking the glow was a good thing =\

Some guy on the General Car section of the forums (I think his username was GTiTom or something like that) did some perfect shots using HDR. There weren't any glowing edges, everything was just very shiny and sharp, almost like a rendering.

When I first learned HDR I went a little crazy with it like yourself.... I took about a million pictures of my motorcycle in HDR. I like it, sometimes.... It got old FAST and now I hate that surreal look because it just looks... stupid.... to me at least. You might enjoy these...

And there really arent any specific tips I can give you for photomatix because no certain settings will work twice for two different pictures. You really gotta adjust the settings invidually for each different picture. All I can suggest is practice practice and practice some more.

he doesn't offer any info i think, but search 'gti' and 'hdr' and you'll find the thread. there's only like 3 results that pop up so you should be able to find it.

Use f8, f9, f11, iso 100, lower iso less noise, plus tripod, take 3 frames all one step apart. ( one under exposed, one normal, one over exposed)

3 shots at iso 100 equals iso 300 in HDR because of the combining of the 3 frames. If you use iso 400 x 3 = 1200 iso = noise.

Its better not to get the noise in to begin with as it hard to get it out.
