Any recommendations on getting a ring flash?
Looking to pick one up for my Canon. I have seen a few but 1. I'm tight on $ because of my mods this month and #2 I use my 16-35mm a lot and from what I've seen a few don't come with an 82mm adapter (some don't come with any).
Thanks |

Yikes, your 16-35 is 82mm? My Nikkor 17-35 is 77mm at least, but 82mm is getting HUGE!
Anyway, I thought ring flashes were mostly used on macro lenses, and I don't think the 16-35 is really a macro lens, is it? A quick look at B&H shows only the Bower SFD-RL71 LED ring LIGHT (not a flash, but constant illumination) as the only one that lists the 82mm. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...gital_LED.html Otherwise, I've got nothing...

thanks dude, yeah I know it's mostly for macro but I like the design for portrait shooting and because of my crop body I sometimes use the top end of the 16-35mm. I'll look into that one thanks.

You could get this:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...ING_FLASH.html and http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...0mm_f_1_8.html It'd be cheaper to get both than get a Canon ring flash.

na... I have the 50mm f/1.4 anyway. I just want to be able to use it on all my lenses is all. The one Scollins recommended will fit my 16-35mm, 50mm and 70-200mm (I just need a size down adapter for the 50mm which is like $5). Plus its only $120 |

One of the reviewers did say it wasn't powerful enough, and another said the working distance was only about 10 inches. I wonder what B&H's return policy is, in case you don't like it? Of course, another reviewer liked it, except for "pap smear speculum" shots. Yowza!

The other option, though not budget friendly, might have been:
Canon MR-14EX Ring flash - $494 Canon Macrolite adapter 72C (to fit a 72mm lens) - $30 82-72 step down ring - $10. Probably vignette like a MOFO though, especially at the wide end.....

yeah. I think this will work out. If I get heavy into shooting with one I'll invest in the a nice one and maybe a 35mm prime

I've had an MR-14EX for several years. Nice flash for its application, but be careful of the telltale "double crescent" highlights that tend to form in every specular surface (like the pupil of every eye). Also the direct on-axis lighting is somewhat flat for general purpose use. Again, good for some things, but not necessarily every time you want a flash.
FWIW you can often find MR-14s on the used market for about $300. |
